When I first started watching baseball in 1975 I latched onto the Reds. Man, he and that team were fun to watch and he embodied the game as much as anyone ever has. And then what a huge disappointment he turned out to be.

Funny because I latched on to the Oakland A's. I totally bought into Findley putting mustaches on them. For me, the A's were Hawkeye and Trapper, the Reds were the Evil Empire, and Pete was the epitome. Of course I gave them their due, loved me some Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan. The 1974 WS was one of the greatest events of my life, I'm not exaggerating. They don't make them like that anymore

Oakland was my team too, and I hated the Reds the Red Sox as a kid.

On the Tuesday edition of “First Take,” Stephen A. Smith called out the entirety of Major League Baseball for the denial of Rose, and he didn’t hold back at all.

“Murderers have been let off quicker than Pete Rose has!” yelled Smith.


“Baseball wants to sit up there with its high and mighty, hypocritical self and denigrate this man… In 1999, Rose got a standing ovation [during the World Series] They gave him a standing ovation. The American people said [blank] all that! We want this man here, we know what he did for the game, we know that he hurt himself, we know that wasn’t a good look, but it shouldn’t erase 23 years – but MLB did it anyway!”

Fabulous player of course, I bet he inspired many to take up the game.

The betting stuff though. You would have to be naïve to believe that a man who was betting daily, numerous bets as much as $20,000 per day NEVER once recouped his massive debts by not backing his team to lose. Whilst there was no evidence produced, he must have been the most disciplined gambler ever to resist that temptation.

I mean if we knew Bazardo was going to throw 3 innings in a game, we wouldn't stick an untraceable $20,000 of forum money on the Mariners to lose that one?

That's why he was never re-instated, there is far more we dont know than we do. And we know a lot.

I just thought of RG from the Times Forum who for years lied about playing with him. What a bizarre guy he was.
