Interesting point..And it took what, ten years for him to quit lying and admit he bet on the Reds. The situation was always on him. He met with Bud Selig, he was given a path for reinsetatement, but he wouldn't or couldn't follow it. He needed to distance himself from gambling but he never did. I read that after the meeting he headed straight to las Vegas. Which brings up another point, now that MLB has decided to put a team in Las Vegas the issue seems murkiermostonmike wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 9:07 pmFabulous player of course, I bet he inspired many to take up the game.
The betting stuff though. You would have to be naïve to believe that a man who was betting daily, numerous bets as much as $20,000 per day NEVER once recouped his massive debts by not backing his team to lose. Whilst there was no evidence produced, he must have been the most disciplined gambler ever to resist that temptation.
I mean if we knew Bazardo was going to throw 3 innings in a game, we wouldn't stick an untraceable $20,000 of forum money on the Mariners to lose that one?
That's why he was never re-instated, there is far more we dont know than we do. And we know a lot.

Don't forget that he was Wander Franco before Wander Franco. "I thought she was 16" as an excuse should not be uttered by an adult, especially one who is 34, married, and has two children. The fact the guy could hit a baseball does not excuse the fact that he was a scumbag.

But now MLB is all for gambling even though that opens the door for all kinds of game manipulation by players and umpires.

Opens the door? Didn’t something happen over a hundred years ago that people might have described as “a little bit fishy?” Where there is any money there is always opportunity for corruption. Embracing gambling doesn’t make it any more or less corrupt than in the past.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2024 8:37 pmBut now MLB is all for gambling even though that opens the door for all kinds of game manipulation by players and umpires.

Was the age of consent 16 in wherever/whenever the incident occurred?bhofferb wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2024 8:30 pmDon't forget that he was Wander Franco before Wander Franco. Yes, which is why he picked that number. https://www.phillymag.com/news/2024/10/ ... -gambling/Pharmabro wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2024 9:20 pmWas the age of consent 16 in wherever/whenever the incident occurred?bhofferb wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2024 8:30 pmDon't forget that he was Wander Franco before Wander Franco. Wow, I haven't though about him in years. Yeah, I did a little 20 questions with him over a couple months so he wouldn't get suspicious. His answers systematically eliminated him from being any of the Reds backup catchers of the 70s.....DavidGee24 wrote: ↑Wed Oct 02, 2024 11:56 pmI just thought of RG from the Times Forum who for years lied about playing with him. Funny because I latched on to the Oakland A's. I totally bought into Findley putting mustaches on them. For me, the A's were Hawkeye and Trapper, the Reds were the Evil Empire, and Pete was the epitome. Of course I gave them their due, loved me some Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan. The 1974 WS was one of the greatest events of my life, I'm not exaggerating. They don't make them like that anymore

Exactly why I am happy Bonds isn't in the HOF. If he did steroids but was a good person I would be fine with it but he was a horrible person.bhofferb wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2024 8:30 pmDon't forget that he was Wander Franco before Wander Franco. Yeah, all the fishy people were gambling and meddling back before it was legal anyway.mostonmike wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2024 9:03 pmOpens the door? It all reminds me how much I like the movie Eight Men Out. That whole Black Sox scandal changed sports in a big way. Owners started playing players more just to keep them honest.

Another vote for Eight Men Out here.
Although as I have said in other discussions, I don't agree with the portrayal of Shoeless Joe as the innocent gormless naïve hick who just innocently went along but still played his heart out.

He took the money and knew that was wrong. He is not that gormless to not understand what he did. He is hardly Private First Class Loudon Downey from a Few Good Men.
