MLBTV has raised Castillo's trade value to $7.7...

Pussies.

Stand on business.
FWIW Luis Castillo's value at Baseball Trade Values has jumped from a negative $30.6 million on November 8, to a negative $6.1 million on November 22, to a positive $5.5 million on December 2 to a positive $2.8 million Monday to $7.7 million this evening.
This one made no sense to me.

How did he dip 11 days ago according to their algo... and then increase back up?

Like, what?
They started focusing on it due to his name being in all the rumors. Good for them.

They seem to change things pretty often. Odd system they've got going.

Would love to see the people behind it...

7.7 in surplus value seems a lot more realistic than negative value given what some of these other guys are going for.

Like what would Castillo get on the market right now? 4/$100M?

Or closer to what Blake Snell got? They're the same age right?

Castillo has a lot more than $7.7M value over what his contract is imo.

He's a $200M player only owed $70M from where I'm sitting.
Here are some of the current contracts, and options that have been exercised-

Max Fried, will be 30 years old, 8yr/$218M
Gerritt Cole, 33, remains with Yankees, 4yr/$144M
Blake Snell, 31, 5yr/$182M
Nathan Eovaldi, 34, 3yr/$75M
Michael Wacha, 32, 3yr/$51M
Luis Severino, 30, 3yr/$67M
Yusei Kikuchi, 33, 3yr/$63M

and Luis Castillo, will be 31, has 3yr/$70M remaining.

He's worth more excess value to a team than $7.7M imo. He's been a workhorse compared to any of them.
Trivial detail but for the record Castillo turned 32 yo on Thursday. Bigger detail. He only put up 2.3 fWAR which is valued at $18.7M. Biggest "Detail" is the trend is not his friend since 2021.

Actually if you adjust his 2020 numbers to a full season it is 6.5 WAR so he has been declining since pre vax Covid.

Huh
Boston Strong
@BostonStrong_34
“There’s been speculation about a trade that would send Castillo to Boston and send first baseman Triston Casas to Seattle, sources said Casas hadn’t been involved in the conversations. Instead, the Mariners were targeting pitching.”

@alexspeier
This makes no sense to me. Seems very counterintuitive. If you have an opportunity to get Casas straight up for an expensive starter who's showing signs of decline, you don't think twice about it. If Dipoto is being offered this deal and doesn't jump on it, he's a moron.

As I understand it, the deal would be trade Castillo for a pitching prospect from the Red Sox to basically be a replacement piece for Castillo going forward and using the salary savings to sign walker. They seem to have a hard-on for walker.
“The hitter the Mariners would love to get is Christian Walker, which for now is out of their price range. As another GM suggested this morning, ‘Craig Breslow is tireless, he's really smart, and if he can clear Castillo's money, give Seattle help elsewhere and allow them to get Walker, maybe he gets Castillo,'” Peter Gammons reported on X, formerly Twitter

That makes sense and as we've all speculated - he either gets traded for a bat or he's a salary dump to free up $ to sign others. I think sadly though we all like the idea of a younger player with far more upside for years to come than an older player that is only going to regress as the years go on in the contract.
Trade him for Casas and sign Bregman and lets call it a day.

I kinda like the urgency, let's get s guy to help this team now. Not be so concerned about future upside.

Last off season they had a hard on for 33 yo RH catcher DH that had a .870. OPS in 2023. A couple months ago they said they needed to reassess what type of hitters they were targeting. So now that are target a 34 yo RH 1B DH that had a .803 OPS. Can't make it up.

Walker isn't a DH
