Tariffs?
Re: Tariffs?
Glad to see Trumps tactics are working.
Even our greatest allies are removing their tariffs on us....

Re: Tariffs?
It would make a BIG difference if tariffs that the US puts in place where in fact paid by China, Mexico, Canada, the EU, etc. (versus Americans). Don't you think that's true?bpj wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 12:07 amSeems kind of like arguing whether income taxes are paid by the employer or employee.gil wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 3:12 pmPresident Trump announced that tariffs would be collected by a new entity called the "External Revenue Service."

Whatever the name, tariffs are paid by American importers, not foreign governments or exporters.
That dynamic has prompted pushback from economists who say the name of the proposed External Revenue Service represents an effort to obscure who pays for tariffs.

Re: Tariffs?
You are dead set on your view that these tariffs will ONLY affect the American people. To avoid them, buy American made products.
And I know they will affect everyone, but please try to think 3-4 steps ahead:
1. with these tariffs, the world will need to come to the table and remove theirs.
2. with these tariffs, everyone will need to pay for them.... not only the rich.
3. if these tariffs work, income tax should be lowered to compensate the higher costs..... making the entire country pay, not only the rich.
4. with these tariffs, we are taking the rest of the world off of the American tit!!!! And nobody likes to get weaned from the free shit.

Re: Tariffs?
I've said this before: I do my best to buy American, and in many cases I know I'm paying more. But I respect people who buy a cheaper product for whatever reason. That is economic freedom and I believe in that.Walla Walla Dawg II wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 2:45 pmYou are dead set on your view that these tariffs will ONLY affect the American people. Regarding your points:
1. If everyone removed all their tariffs? I'd be perfectly fine with that. No tariffs/free trade.
2. What do you mean "not only the rich"?
3. This is not consistent with your point #1. If the tariffs work to make everyone come to the table and remove their tariffs, then we will have no tariff income.
4. That is not how I see a trade deficit. But I know a lot of people (starting with President Trump) see a trade deficit as harmful to the US. I see the US trade deficit resulting from US businesses choosing where it's best to source supplies, components, etc., plus individuals deciding what are the best products for their needs. If one believes in freedom, what is wrong with that?
In general, there are lower labor costs outside the US. And, as much as we don't want to admit this, I think the quality of manufacturing for many products is better outside the US. That is why I think we need a coordinated strategy for a manufacturing renaissance -- science, technology, and the trades -- so we can regain leadership in manufacturing capabilities. We've got too many companies being run by bean counters and lawyers, and they should be being run by engineers.

Re: Tariffs?
Gil, the thing that you need to know is that there is not FREE TRADE. You have stated so many times that you are in favor of free trade and these tariffs hinder free trade. You are wrong. Free trade would be if nobody had tariffs on us and we didn't have tariffs on them...... by definition, that is free trade.
If you are against tariffs, please explain why Germany doesn't allow Ford to sale their vehicles in their country?
If you are against tariffs, please explain why China and Japan don't allow any American Made vehicles sales at all?
Why does France have a 50% tariff on US alcohol?

And this is why you fall under the far-left category. Being a good little soldier and agreeing with the party.gil wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 5:12 pmAnd they were wrong, IMO.Walla Walla Dawg II wrote: ↑Fri Apr 04, 2025 5:06 pmNancy and Berney both loved the idea of tariffs 20 years ago.

They'd just raise the price to account for the tariff and pass it along to the importer at that point. That's how business works.
Either way, it's a cost to the consumer. As such, it's an impediment to business for foreign countries in our market because it makes it harder to undercut US companies on price.
A sad day for people who'd rather buy cheap foreign goods than see a flourishing US economy and industry.
I agree the goal should be no tariffs. Free trade. But how do you get there without retaliatory tariffs when other countries have tariffs on us?
Re: Tariffs?
Why should ours be 0% when theirs isn't?

What party am I agreeing with. I just said sanders and Pelosi were wrong. I don't think they should have these tariffs, but I'm a US citizen and this is where any voice I have will be heard. Why does the US have a 25% tariff on pickups? Why does the US have a huge tariff on sugar? Obviously, it's protecting domestic industries, but I think it's wrong.
