That is where we differ. I agree with you that it most likely doesn't effect the guy based on how he hits. Sure, I think it is very likely that he sees more fastballs, and they may not work him off the plate as often. But I promise you that the guy hitting after impacts the decision on when to work around or flat out walk a guy. There is absolutely zero chance it doesn't. It was a huge reason why guys in the NL starting batting their Pitcher 8th. They were tired of the 8 hitter getting walked on purpose because the Pitcher was just going to end the inning and the top of the order couldn't hit with runners on.
So, the definition of protection meaning the three hitter gets better because of the four hitter? No, I think that is less likely than it flat out impacting how many times he gets pitched around. If I'm managing against the Mariners? Cal aint getting pitched to if he has a chance to do major damage. I highly doubt I am alone in that line of thinking. I believe that the Rangers proved that, no?
