the point of the thing is predicting future outcomes, it says to me his messy innings are not relevant to predicting his future outcomes
They have though.

Yes, he's an effective closer and has a low ERA.

He's also blown 6 saves... one away from a league high.

Munoz's fastball isn't that great, even at 97. There are so many pitchers now that throw 96+ that hitters are pretty used to it. You sure can't groove that shit down the middle to someone like Caminero. In spring, they kept telling us he was working on a kick change, but he seems to have given that up. I wonder if Munoz would be better off ditching his 4-seam and just throwing sinker/slider.

The thing that sucks about Munoz's fastball is that he doesn't command it well.

A 97-99 MPH fastball should be plenty effective but he seldom locates it. He knows this and it's why he throws a billion sliders an inning.

He'd be close to unhittable if he could just place fastballs more often.

2x fastballs almost got him in serious trouble... one allowed a base hit, the other missed 2 inches off the plate for a walk.

So we are saying he's been good across a 46 game season so far. Tick

Future predictions - I don't want to see my closer putting that first batter on during a play-off game which this closer has a very strong tendency to do.

None of the 6 blown saves probably matter during a full season, but in play-off games, its the small sample size that really matter and will eventually be costly. Think Robbie Ray - as good as he was generally, it all pales into insignificance with what we will remember him for - a blown save, bottom of the 9th, Mariners leading 7–5, two outs, runners on first and second. Not his fault as such - should have stuck with Sewald.

BTW - I've been saying this since the start of the season, see this thread.

And that first batter OBP is worse this season than his career so far.

Mariners win! We're HEROES!!!

Really felt like we should have routed these bums off the field though. The early home runs were great, but the situational hitting with runners all over the bases, especially with Naylor leading off two innings with doubles, was awful.

But at the same time, those early home runs were great because they held up.

Suarez has been straight up garbage. Apparently he just can't hit at T-mobile or when wearing a Mariner uniform.

we can complain and complain about munoz, its only relevant compared to other closers. For all his faults he is rated 6th best and that's a very current ranking. Yeah he's blown six saves, like half the league has blown at least five.

yup hero's!

Want to see a wild disparity?

Andres Munoz slider vs fastball:

Slider: .077avg/.077slug w. an xba of .148 and xslug of .217.

Fastball: .289avg/.474 slug w. an xba of .360 and xslug of .675.

It's honestly weird that he even throws the fastball. I wonder why he doesn't just throw the sinker more which has been a far more effective pitch. My guess is he thinks his 4-seamer sets up the eyes of the hitter where the sinker drops like a slider does.

I'd really like to see a closer develop a nasty curve or knuckle curve or some variation of a curve (12-6 even). Something to really get the guys to chase. Fastball you can throw center cut & the batter will just sit on it. Meanwhile if you have a devastating breaking pitch, if you command it well & hits your spot, you'll get hitters to chase 9x out of 10, that's why Munoz needs to really on his sinker more. Don't really so much on your slider. If your gonna go up top with it to get them to bite I'd go above the lettering in that case. He just worries me every time he steps out there now. I still say give Brash a few more opportunities.

His slider is the best pitch in the game currently. ???
