I can buy them being burned out mentally but not physically other than Cal.

BTW, was that the worst start to a baseball game in Mariners history? It sure felt like it. Just looking at the first two innings that was remarkable.
i pointed out before, these guys are at the very pinnacle of performance. It's not the same sort of wearing down as like a mailman. But if you just a bit off by mental or physical fatigue I could see that affecting the ability to hit a baseball. We are talking having an edge, its not like their feet hurt or something

bob melvin has more experience than dan wilson
For Soto, who had never played more than 153 games before last season, knowing when to take a break during the course of a game proved essential. In more than 10% of his games last year, Soto's then-manager, Bob Melvin, pulled him in the late innings for extra rest. It worked so well that by late August, Soto said, he felt fresh enough to strive for 162, even with 27 games in 31 days to end the season.

"My body felt great," Soto said. "As long as I can be healthy, I want to be out there every day. At the end of the day, you never know when you're going to be able to do it. If I have the chance, I'm going to do it."

I just tried to look up what are the most runs the Mariners have ever given up in the first inning of a game, and there's no info other than the most they've ever given up in any inning is 11.

The most runs the Mariners have ever given up in the first inning probably isn't very high, I can't think of any game ever where they got torched really badly.

As far as the most they've ever scored in the first inning, we all at least know when it happened, the 2002 game against the White Sox where Boone and Cameron went back-to-back twice in the first. Ten runs in that one. I also recall a game in 1979 against the Yankees where they put up a nine-spot.

I was at that game. I think it was the Red Sox and I am sure it was the first inning.

I'm sure the Mariners have allowed more than 4 runs in the first inning a hundred times and more than 8 runs in the first two innings dozens of times. But how many times have they started a game by going down on just 3 pitches in the first inning and the other team getting 5 consecutive hits in their half? And when you add in that the lineup is supposedly good and Kirby was considered a near-elite talent going into this season...

Here's the one I'm alluding to: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxe ... 7110.shtml This game by itself probably cost Tommy John the Cy Young Award. And look at who accounted for the Yankees' only run.
