Who would you rather have at 2B?
Re: Who would you rather have at 2B?
This is apples vs grapes.
What is the price to get Donavan? He appears to be several teams in on him. Vs how much is Yandy, Lowe, or Ketel.
What do we know about Polo’s health trajectory. He proved he could hit here last year and toward the end of the year he was the 1’ 2B. Is he fully recovered and projected to be able to man 2B mainly in 2026. How many years and at how much $.

Nothing pol was a 2nd baseman. Polanco is a 2nd base guy only in name. He is a DH now and occasional 2ndSibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Thu Dec 11, 2025 6:53 pmSo what has Brandon Donovan done to make you confident that he wouldn-t struggle to hit at T-Mobile like 90% of veteran players that sign here?

I think that you might have had more peeps chiming in if you had made this a more robust poll. Polonco or Donovan, while probably accurate, is a bit anemic. For me, I would much rather see Young win the 2nd base job, pushing Polonco into the DH position. Donovan might be an interesting player for the M's, but the cost will be prohibitive. We'll see where the market goes for Donovan as we get closer to ST.Sexymarinersfan wrote: ↑Thu Dec 11, 2025 3:05 amI didn't include Marte in this questionnaire, because I feel like we all would prefer Marte. But between Donovan or Polo, who you got?

Well, Cole would need to grow out that mustache a bit more for me to think he's ready to start games in the Majors full time.
Re: Who would you rather have at 2B?
How about Polo and Donavan?
Say the M’s can get Polo for 2 or 3 years X 13- 15M?
Brendan Donavan will be cheap. He made 2.8M is his ARB 1 year 2 to go. 2026 is probably 5 to 6M (5.4M according to RR) and then 10-12 M likely in 2027. Roster Resource has the 40 man at 151M . You could add them both for 2026 with-in the 170M-ish budget.

You can look at the depth chart and I have reason for concern
RF Robles
2B Young*
3B Ben
DH Canzone*
BU C Raposo , Bench Rivas, Raley, Samar Taylor
So the ? Marks for me include all those positions. You can’t have too many good players. Everybody can DH be it Canzone vs Raley as the 1’ DH vs the LH side of a RH platoon RF and in Raley’s case back-up 1B.
But 2B/3B bring back Polo for 2B and then having Brendan D for 3B. 1st Donavan is 28 and plays good D at 3B but can also slide over to 2B or OF if needed.
Now spending your resources this way shores up the bats but now you are up near what has been the spending expectations and the M’s have said they wanted to add on more quality BP part, and BU catcher is an unknown and we should expect to see Cal spending 30-40+ games off of catcher. BU catcher is an important spot for us.
But the line-up.
1. Donavan* 3B
2. Julio CF
3. Cal** C
4. Naylor* 1B
5. Randy LF
6. Polo** 2B
7. Robles / Raley* RF
8. Canzone* DH
9. JP* SS
Bench: C Raposo, 2 of ( Young, Ben, Rivas, Bliss, Colt, etc)
That works for me what about you?

Good intel here on the 2B/3B situation and Jerry coins a new word. The Tri-toon.

Re: Who would you rather have at 2B?
I'd love to get a gap hitter at 2B or even at 3B, but we have struck out on contact hitters before. Brett Boone was awesome, but it's hard to forget guys like Jeff Cirillo, Scott Spezio, or Chone Figgins who were absolute disasters playing in Seattle.

So frustrating. They have this wide open opportunity and they're going to red carpet a couple kids who already disappointed the first time around into starting roles instead of taking the obvious potential upgrades that are dangling on the market.D-train wrote: ↑Fri Dec 12, 2025 5:47 pmGood intel here on the 2B/3B situation and Jerry coins a new word. We'll probably be talking in a couple years about the guys Dipollander traded away for Suarez and Naylor that broke out for their new team.
Meanwhile, Dipoto passes up the easy moves on the free agent market to put in front of Williamson/Young/Emerson. Like usual.
But at least the budget isnt too cresty during the 2026 crest that Dipoto avoided free agents the past few years for...
And they're still taking the cheap route. Remarkable.

I normally like it when JD is upfront about what the broad strokes of the plans are but this appears to me to signal the Cards that we really have a greater need for Donavan because he can do 2B/3B and even O.F.
