Not quite Donn - this one is the Players which is often referred to as "the fifth major". The 17th and 18th holes at Sawgrass are iconic. The 17th in particular would be recognisable to most golf fans.Donn Beach wrote: βSat Feb 28, 2026 3:53 pmI don't think it's considered mundane or unremarkable. I mean, what do they call the championship for non-players?

That
The Players Championship, played annually at TPC Sawgrass in March, is widely considered the unofficial "fifth major" in professional golf. While not an official major, it boasts the strongest field in golf, a massive million prize purse (as of 2023), and immense prestige, often placing it just below the traditional four majors

Murdered what? I mistakenly referred to it as the PGA championship thinking the PGA and the PGA tour were the same thing. But before I could get my post fixed Mike posted the fifth major deal.
So not being a particularly big golf fan I'm just now investigating the difference. So the premier tournament would be the PGA championship but the premier players association is the PGA tour. That would seem to make sense

When you call everything a championship the word starts to lose its puissance.
What next, the Champions Championship?

The PGA tour championship is a championship of professional golfers. I don't know how many should get to be called championships but shouldn't the professionals get to have one?Sibelius Hindemith wrote: βSun Mar 01, 2026 3:12 amYeah yeah, that's the ticket!Donn Beach wrote: βSat Feb 28, 2026 4:02 pmI just fixed that, it's the PGA tour championship. As I understand it, the PGA tour championship is the championship of the professional golfers association. What I find funny is how they seem to like to have them at the beginning of the season.
