Well said Big Maple. Some valid points there. That absolutely drives me nuts when Julio strikes out for the 3rd time and then giggles on the way back to the dugout. I don't think any of the die hard fans that have stuck with this team for decades find any humor in that.
I agree with keeping Cal, Young, and Donovan. Although until Donovan can prove he can stay healthy I may throw him in that category as well. Everyone else is fair game.
I am not sure on the Alex Cora hiring. I like Dan as a person, but as a manager he leaves a lot to be desired.
Chris Getz has done a fine job in Chicago. Seems like he is going about the rebuild the right way.
Either way, I hope they get it figured out. I would like to see a Mariners World Series sometime in my life (I am over 50) and the way this roster is built unfortunately I don't see it happening anytime soon.
Most of what I said was tongue in cheek. I don't expect nor do I embrace a full rebuild. Tearing it down to the studs will never happen - we are just coming out the other side of a major rebuild.
My point was mainly that Dipoto et al. were given a lot of latitude and nearly a decade to rebuild this team, and they wound up a dollar short and a day late. Yeah, there are a few bright spots: we do seem to do well with starting pitcher development. We did pick and groom the best catcher in the game. And Julio - if he could ever get his head out of his ass, grow up, and start actually leading by example, could be a mega star.
I am excited about Young and Emerson, and our middle infield could be amazing in a year or two.
But here's the thing: our window is nearly closed. The Astros have finally collapsed, but the A's rebuilt in 2 or 3 years, and they look like a serious team if they can get a few good starters. Many of our starters will be headed to free agency in a few years, and they aren't going to have any sense of loyalty to a team that consistently fails to give them run support. The rest of the roster is utter codswhallop. LF, RF, bullpen, 3B and DH are all gaping holes you could drive a truck through.
So yeah - a 10 year rebuild that nets a half-baked roster, a marginally competent manager, and ownership that refuses to pony up some serious money to land a few superstars to take us to the promised land...? Our window closes while the A's and the Angels start to surge again.
The best - the very, very best thing that could happen to this team is if the owners sell the team to some Seattle billionaire who decides to buy the team a world series. But that's a hail mary.
Hope springs eternal.
