He got sporadic playing time because of the particular needs of the teams he was on at the time. He was a filler piece in Cincinnati while they were transitioning to a younger lineup. Minnesota was just a giant mess and decided to blow things up and rebuild and obviously he wasn't going to start over Vlad in Toronto.

Yes they were fooled and his current stats bear that out.

Somehow you think a season and half of struggles is more indicative of who a player is than the other 7 seasons of success. Obviously this is a matter of opinion and I am not even concerned with the particular player. Even if France was sucking this year its a philosophical Issue. The problem is they pulled the plug on a player who even in his struggles was only slightly below league average as a hitter and they did so without an answer waiting in the wings. Then they decide to go out and commit long term to a player who statistically equivalent to the guy they pulled the plug on. It is a classic sell low buy high blunder and the roster construction is going to be screwed for several years because of it.

He hasn't been the statistical equivalent to Naylor for years. You can't just spout that nonsense.

From '23-'25 Naylor was the FAR superior player.

The M's cut France in 2024. In the 3 seasons prior (21-23) he put up 8.0 WAR
The M's signed Naylor in 2026 in the 3 seasons prior(23-25) he put up 6.8 WAR

Do you know what the one glaring difference is?

France was trending well down and Naylor was trending well up. France had put up 0.7 bWAR in 230 games in '23 and '24 for the M's. Naylor had had put up 6.8 bWAR between '23-'25 before the M's signed him.

From 2023 -2025 Naylor put up 6.8 WAR

Somebody do a welfare check on Cap and see if there's an open pod in his toolshed. I think the Body Snatchers might have duplicated him and only retained 99% of his knowledge. Someone walked in on them just before they could download the first basemen part.

Relief pitching is really fickle, and while it's hard to ignore Miller's dominance, you generally don't trade a good starting pitcher and a good player (albeit a prospect) for a relief pitcher. Personally, I wouldn't do this trade although at least it's not like the dreaded two-headed monster of Jose Cruz Jr. for Mike Timidlin/Paul Sploojaric and Derek Lowe/Jason Varitek for Healthcliff Scrotumb.

The Giants are clear sellers heading into the trade deadline, and contenders are sending scouts to check out the club’s potential trade chips. Outfielder Heliot Ramos and utilityman Casey Schmitt are among the bats being scouted by opposing teams, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Slusser mentions the Phillies and Mariners as teams with representatives in attendance for Monday’s matchup against the Royals.

Heliot has played mostly LF, a little RF and Casey has played, in this order: LF, DH, 3B, 1B, 2B, SS.
Both are RH bats.

I'd prefer Schmitt but both would be good gets. At what price? Don't know.

Schmitt's star has faded a bit since his hot start in April/May.

He is an 83 wRC+ hitter since 6/1, producing just 0.2 fWAR, good for 11th worst among qualified right handed hitters.

Conversely, Ramos has caught fire... slashing .313/.323/.578/.901 in July. He also has a .906 OPS vs left handed pitchers. Schmitt has cooled off a lot since the beginning of the year against lefties... once slashing well over .900, he's down to an .845 OPS vs the dexterity on the year.

Ramos has also had the more consistent career... an All Star appearance in '24 and around a 118 OPS+ average the last 3 years. He's also crushed left handed pitching through out his career to a tune of a .857 OPS.

They both have the same amount of control left... and to me, Ramos would replace Refsnyder on the roster which is really all that's needed at the moment.

Schmitt looked like Shit this weekend...Ramos is pretty meh
