An off-season plan based on Dipoto and Hollander's comments.

I'm not including Laz or Arroyo because the samples too small

So let me get this straight:
Their gonna role out a lineup with the following players.
Cole Young - 23
Colt Emerson - 20
Laz Montes - 21
Julio Rodriguez - 25
Michael Arroyo - 21
Kade Anderson - 22
And you wonder why teams don't take them seriously.

They'll add something. Unfortunately, they'll probably add another version of Ward/Refsnyder/Solano/Garver/Pollock. Presumably as we speak the front office is looking over the list of 33-36 year old RH hitters who used to be good who are available.HawkandMariner88 wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2026 3:04 amSo let me get this straight:

I agree with Dipoto, the issue is culture. If you're adding players it should be in relation to culture, like when they brought Junior back

The culture of napping in the clubhouse and then quitting the team and driving off into the sunset to Florida without as much as saying good bye???Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2026 5:24 amI agree with Dipoto, the issue is culture. That was after they gave him an additional extension. There were issues in the clubhouse, the deal with ichiro. Bringing Junior back helped solve it. Anyway, I'm tired of just applying more players, there's more to it than that, at least to me. They need to start looking at how the team fits together. Maybe in other aspects, get more athletic, more speed. I do think they need an anchor for the rotation. I think they need to think about the synergy of itD-train wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2026 10:02 amThe culture of napping in the clubhouse and then quitting the team and driving off into the sunset to Florida without as much as saying good bye???Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2026 5:24 amI agree with Dipoto, the issue is culture. What culturally... didn't fit about the Refsnyder acquisition? He seems like a respected veteran and quality clubhouse guy. Same should be said about Brendan Donovan.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2026 12:13 pmThat was after they gave him an additional extension. There were issues in the clubhouse, the deal with ichiro. Applying these players had nothing to do with the culture in the clubhouse. The culture... or lack there of... was already set.
JP Crawford, despite everyone calling him one, isn't a leader of men. Never was.
Julio or "DJ Pleno" is a child who famously needed a 40-year-old 1B as a teddy bear to pull his head out of his ass.
Randy hit well this year, but it was clear there was a disconnect between him and effort in left field.
Josh Naylor looked checked out after the first 2 weeks of the season.
So if the players can't set it... who can?
To me, that culture is set by the manager. You have organizations that have an implied standard... NYY, CLE, Tampa, LAD, MIL...
All of these organizations have one thing in common... they don't hire wet sacks of potatoes like the Mariners did in Servais and Wilson.
They have hard-nosed, old school guys who are fiery and don't let spoiled, young men off the hook for poor performance and attitude. You then acquire players who apply the same message and standard to the clubhouse itself.

Yeah, it could be a different style of manager, but I wouldn't stop there. There are some nice guys in the clubhouse, Dan Wilson is a nice guy. I don't think leadership is chewing guys out, or calling them out. And I wonder how much leadership a manager can apply? Didn't Wilson learn under one of the best? And wasn't he the one Lou felt would be the one that could carry it on? Did Wilson let the players down or did the players let Wilson down? In any event, the team this year seemed to spend the season sitting around waiting for things to change and they didn't.
That's the theme of the season for me. Personally I wouldn't change the manager and call it good“We were just waiting for it to turn around, and it never quite did,” said Gilbert.

Mike McDonald is a nice guy and he chewed out Derrick Hall big time we're getting too close to Sam on Hard Knocks.
A leader can and should be both a good cop and a bad cop

Wilson was echoing the "we're just waiting for this thing to turn around" sentiment at literally every presser.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2026 3:49 pmYeah, it could be a different style of manager, but I wouldn't stop there. Of course you don't just change the manager and "call it good."
It takes the manager steering the ship and making sure all the players understand the direction the ship is headed and their role in getting the ship there. It takes the manager then holding players accountable in getting there.
Do that over and over... stop coddling them... and you've got a culture of winning set.
