Comprehensive look at who every mock draft has us taking

Garrett Mitchell
5 tool CF UCLA

Seattle has been on a roll with college prospects, taking Kyle Lewis, Evan White, Logan Gilbert and George Kirby in that order since 2016. The Mariners have selected exactly one prep prospect inside the top-10 of the first round during the 21st century, and I’m sure they’d like a rain check on that pick (Alex Jackson in 2014). With the final prospect of the top tier now off the board, Seattle will have to dive into the second tier of prospects. While Mitchell and and Zac Veen likely headline this group, Ed Howard and Max Meyer have also been named as prospects in play at this pick. Some believe the Mariners might even snatch the top shortstop in this class (Ed Howard), which would likely allow them at least one overslot pick later in the draft. While there might be some truth to those rumors, Mitchell is the top college bat remaining and Seattle has avoided risky prep players in recent years. Jerry Dipoto has recently gone on record saying the Mariners are targeting up the middle prospects at pick-6, and Mitchell will almost certainly stick in center field as a professional.
This is my pick. JK in LF and Julio in RF.

6) Mariners: Max Meyer, RHP, Minnesota
Three straight years with a college arm for Seattle, with Meyer answering a lot of questions about his ability to stay in a rotation with his hot start this spring.

CBS sports:
6
team logo Mariners
Pick: OF Garrett Mitchell, UCLA ($5,742,900 slot value)

The board starts to open up a bit after the top five players. The Mariners have drafted only one high school player in the first round since 2011 (Alex Jackson in 2014) and the bet here is they'll stick to the college ranks with Mitchell. Mitchell is a tools freak with big power, top-of-the-line speed, and excellent center field defense. He authored a .355/.425/.484 batting line in 15 games prior to the shutdown. Mitchell's ability to make consistent contact is the greatest long-term question on the field -- he has been a Type I diabetic since childhood but teams are comfortable with his ability to manage his disease -- but the tools and potential are there for stardom.

Baseball Prospect Journal
6. Seattle Mariners: Nick Gonzales, 2B, New Mexico State

Nick Gonzales has thrived offensively throughout his collegiate career. He hit five home runs in a game this season and finished the year batting .448 with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs in 58 at-bats.

He’s played at 3,900 feet above sea level at New Mexico State, but his success last summer in the Cape Cod League has quieted some of the critics. He played shortstop this spring but profiles as an offensive-minded second baseman in pro ball.

Sodo mojo
Pick 6: Nick Gonzales, 2B New Mexico State

So, yeah I would really like Max Meyer to be a Mariner, if you’ve been reading my reports, you’d know that is the case. I just don’t think he’ll be on the board at six and the best player remaining is Nick Gonzales, so he is the pick. But if you’re reading major disappointment in this selection, you shouldn’t be. Gonzales is a very good selection here.

With arguably the best all-around bat in the class, Gonzales was the best player in college baseball before it was ended by COVID-19. Gonzales has a plus hit grade and already possess average in-game power with plus raw power that was starting to transition to the game as he slugged 12 home runs in just 16 games in 2020.

Gonzales was playing shortstop in 2020, but his future will likely be second base. He lacks the fluidity and hands required to play shortstop but should profile as an average defender at second base with a bat that could carry a third base profile. He isn’t a great athlete but is solidly above-average and carries decent run times in his game.

Gonzales could be the type of bat who flies through the minor leagues and once settled, will likely hit between .280-.300 with 20 home runs and 30 doubles, as well as a .350 OBP and average defense at second. Gonzales could have a 6-10 year run of posting 3+ WAR seasons and has been favorably compared to Brewers infielder Keston Hiura.

If selected, Gonzales would likely fall comfortably into the #4 spot in our prospect ranks, with a strong argument to made that he can jump Logan Gilbert for the #3 spot. Adding a top or middle of the order bat in the first round with an All-Star potential is never a bad thing, so Mariners fans should applaud this selection if it comes to pass.
