Re: Bruce to Phillies
Since the player we got will likely never wear a major league uniform, DiPoto basically sold Bruce for 3.5 million dollars.
On the bright side, Smith now will play every day!

Unfortunately, these guys are worth only about what the other teams are paying. In the end, we might as well have just eaten Cano’s contract and kept Diaz.
Re: Bruce to Phillies
What would Diaz do for the Mariners right now? They have a possible future because of the trade. Kelenic is going to be a steal giving up a relief pitcher for him.Happy as hell wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:16 pmUnfortunately, these guys are worth only about what the other teams are paying. We could have traded Diaz, unencumbered by Cano’s contract, for Kelenic or someone like him and a lot more. We took on contracts which combined are almost as bad as Cano’s and now we have to eat them. Where’s the gain?Juliooooo wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:47 pmWhat would Diaz do for the Mariners right now? Guessing Met's fans would give up Diaz in a heartbeat to dump Cano's salary about now.Happy as hell wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:16 pmUnfortunately, these guys are worth only about what the other teams are paying. In the end, we might as well have just eaten Cano’s contract and kept Diaz.

Exactly, and aren't we talking like 40 million over two years compared to 140 million or whatever over 6 years?
And then Dipoto flipped off some of that debt to some other schmo?
Doesn't sound all that bad buddy.
I'm happy to be rid of Cano's lazy ass whether he hits like good or bad Nori Aoki. Good riddance weirdbeard.
And also we got a better return than I would have expected even for just Diaz. A closer just isn't worth a stud OF. Diaz can take a hike too. But he was cool.
Not in the Cano- too cool for school- kind of way.

Re: Bruce to Phillies
So the Mariners paid 60 million toward Cano's contract, traded Swarzak for a guy that earns about 5 million (saving 3 million) and paid approx 21 million toward Bruce. They saved approx 34 million and came away with Kelenic, Dunn, Bautista, Biddle and Scheiner (plus viscaino, who is on the IL for the rest of the season and will likely never pitch for the Mariners).
You would prefer have Robinson Cano and a closer that isn't needed given the atrocious play of the team? Diaz probably wasn't going to bring back much better than Kelenic and Dunn plus scrubs. They got that and got rid of Cano's contract. It was a great trade.
