its too early
It was too early to sign a pitcher to a big contract that had zero big league experience. Hopefully it wasn't too early to sign a 1B who had never played about AA to a long term contract.

But there is no downside to being excited early.
I partially agree,

If he was as advertised something like a 4+ ERA, but mid 3's fip I would not be so down on this but the 5's ERA with the straight low spin rate FB is concerning to say the least
He needs to get out in front to use the chase pitches but if they are laying off everything and just hunting FB and killing it??????

I don't see a path to redemption, probably should have done some sort of offseason structured instructional to get that spin rate up

Nobody will ever convince me that signing him after the 2018 season when everyone knew the absolutely earliest we had a chance to compete was 2021 was remotely a good idea. I don't care if he had an ERA under 1. Even if he pitched well last season and this season all it does is diminish our draft position. Just a move completely in conflict with a proper rebuild.

That I do agree with
!

However, I see Kikuchi as a rebound from our true love Ohtani jilting us!

Ohtani is on the Angels on a rookie deal ( ROY) btw
Bat 133 OPS+, 5+ WAR
Arm 127 ERA+ 10 starts about 1&1/2

If I could get one alternate timeline no KIK all Oh, OH, Ohtani! You know

However, if we would have got Ohtani going into to 2018 would there have been the sell-off?
Ohtani 2018 151 OPS+ 100+ games near 3 WAR
Arm 127 ERA+ 10 starts
4 WAR combined
Other than old washed up Felix the other 4 starters averaged 2&1/2+ WAR
They won 89 and + 4 WAR from Ohtani and that puts them at 93 even with the injury limiting his starts and Pitching WAR which would have tallied 4+ WAR alone
And again they would have just missed the playoffs

Just musing

I wish we had Ohtani at no huge contract vs worthless KIk at no less than 60 million
