I eventually thought about Roger Salkeld. He was the number 3 pick back in 1989. flashed in his 1st call-up 2.5 ERA and 2.2 fip 2 starts in 3 apps 14.1 innings. I remember I was short a quarter in buying the premium 1991 leaf series 2 pack. I had purchased 2 with no rookies, or special cards just filler. I was due. 3rd card in there it was the famed gold leaf rookie card belonging to my prime target. "Roger freaking Salkeld"! I yelled so pumped up. Flash in the pan!

He is from Hermiston, Oregon. I was living there when he came back for a little home town loving for the local boy made good.

Any how, quick story.

We were at the bar, he had driven in his hummer. I believe it was his cowboy caddy. Anyhow, at some point I am talking to him after I had gone out to put my pool ques away and he asks me was there people hanging out in the lot. I was like yea like there is toward the end of every week-end night at the big bar of that dusty little town. He was like "Why don't you go out there and keep an eye on my Hummer." I was like sure I'll get right on that.

Franklin Gutierrez had a great first year, hitting at .300 through August, had the makings of a 5-tool player, but weird illnesses and injuries over the next 4-5 years lead to Nowhere.

Bummer.

That was Z’s first trade, excellent actually, also brought us lefty Vargas, Carp, Endy Chavez, the speedy leadoff guy who was having a solid year before Betancourt slammed into him, and others.

Seems guys on a hot streak here usually get hurt!

Cirillo was a consistent .300 hitter for at least 5 years before arriving here.

Hit over .320 for 4 seasons.

Two guys come to mind, both supposed to be great hitters, and turned out to have good Septembers, only to never really be relevent again.

Dustin Ackley and Jeremy Reed. Heck, I just realized as I googled to figure out what Jeremy Reed's name was (always have to Google Freddy Garcia trade because I can never remember) that Mike Morse was involved in that trade too!

I had high hopes for Dustin Ackley, Jeremy Reed, Gil Meche, Joel Pinero.....I am sure I am forgetting some.

Good pick, Pineiro, had 2 strong seasons here before losing it, eventually had a 15 win season with the Cards, can’t believe he won 104!

Good one. It’s like he just vanished into the ether after one good season. I remember thinking for part of a season that between him, Phil Bradley and Alvin we were going to have something special, but that dream fell apart quicker than you can say Lee Guetterman.
