I absolutely reject there are "10,000" fans at games. I guarantee you this - they ain't selling 10,000 tickets. Zero chance. The league and it's cronies 100% fudge these numbers to pretend the league is relevant - it is not. The glaring proof? They are 100% dependant on the NBA subsidizing them. Without the NBA completely funding them - they fold in a day. Supply/Demand. The demand is clearly not there - or it could stand on it's own - right? The "WNBA is popular" propoganda is utterly hysterical.I am sure there have been games that have had admirable attendance - it is 100% the exception to the rule. Now go investigate tickets SALES. 10,000 people ain't paying to see 3rd rate talent and $25 dollar parking. Attendance figured are 1,000% inflated to give the illusion. I think even the NBA's popularity has fallen off dramatically. I would bet the majority of sonics fans now just merely shrug at the notion of the NBA returning to Seattle. It's all smoke and mirrors. I am not interested in manipulated statistics - show me profit and a league sustaining on it's own - the rest is distraction and nonsense. The WNBA is about projecting "equality" - except it isn't 'equality' when someone else pays all your bills, now is it?

If the WNBA is popular, where are the prime time games? They don't get prime time coverage, as far as I know because that is the most expensive ad sales time - WNBA sponsers (who are they?) can't afford that. Who is the WNBA's target audience? What products hit that market? Can you define the WNBA's target audience? Not easy, is it - because it's ultra small and niche.

Ask yourself why they would artificially inflate attendance and viewership numbers, then see above.

Half the people that tune in to watch WNBA games probably do so because they enjoy seeing racist black lesbians dishing out cheapshots (e,g. eye gouges, elbows to the face, strangulation) on straight white females without facing any repercussions. Totally sick and disgusting what they have become.

The irony in all of this, is if these guys, ahem, ladies, actually joined the league - it would probably be huge for viewership and visibility. You'd have the protesting, for sure, but you now would have a travelling circus - people would pay to see that. It would probably be the best thing to happen to the league - and no I am not joking. Just think about it. I love it when I see "WNBA coverage" on the front page of ESPN - Disney still pretending anyone actually gives a shit - NO ONE does. This would actually make it relevant - for a moment in time at least. Would not surprise me if this was a publicity stunt - think-tanked by the 'league' and marketing. Seriously. It's so absurd - yet kinda brilliant.
Just like a 100 years ago when people paid to see Bearded Ladies at the Carnival! lol

This is the straight White woman that got Clothes lined but the black chick in the blonde wig that blamed getting ejected from the game on White Privilege. Unfortunately she is 6'1" and I am only 5'11" it won't work between us but man what a woman.

Um, isn't a black chick wearing a blonde wig cultural appropriation? Where's all the liberal protests? WHERE? smh

I rememebr seeing some black chicks wig fly off in a game - that was literaly the highlight. I wonder if the league has a wig sponsor - serious question - a lot of these women seem to wear these outrageous wigs. Oh, they should start wearing beards, too! Then again, looks like that just might be happening

I seriously hope these guys do it - the utter absurdity would be so so so so so priceless - and would immediately end the 'men in women's sports' debate on a dime. Please make it so.

This is kind of a Gish gallop of a post. No one said the WNBA is nearly as popular as the NBA. Yes, there are significant subsidies and the NBA has a significant ownership stake. But how is that different from any other business starting a new subsidiary? The established parent company doesn't expect the new enterprise to make money for a while, so you INVEST in it.

Meanwhile, I'd love to see some proof backing up your assertions. "Attendance figured are 1,000% inflated" "The league and it's cronies 100% fudge these numbers" "they ain't selling 10,000 tickets. Zero chance."

Gil, great post. Although I hate the NBA and WNBA, I'd also like to see the supporting numbers. But I also realize there is a difference between "tickets sold" and "patrons attended".

Apparently last night Las Vegas was playing New York in a prime time game and Vegas rested three of their starters including the best player in the league. New York ended up winning by 40. Great advertisement there for the WNBA, the stupidest league ever.

Two years ago my wife and I did a tour of Climate Pledge Arena and when we got to the press room we did this. Exact verbiage too. 😄
