Why don't you suggest who the Mariners should go get?

Do an analysis of free agents you like or who might be available in a trade.
It sounds like you are in the same boat as I am. II don't think any of the big "difference makers" are available. (Rooker, Vlad, etc), and this sports head mantra that you want to hear from Dipota is grandiose but dumb.

JD
"I am going to do whatever it takes to go get Brent Rooker!"

Billy Beane~ "OK, Robles, Raley, Woo, Lazaro, Troy Taylor, Sloan, Colt, Ford, and Kirby?"

JD~ Yes! I have full filled my oath to the fans, and have made the team better by adding that big bat!

Reality check! You can't bravado your way into forcing other GMs to give you their best players. This is not Madden legacy mode.
Can you please stop with that?

It helps nobody.

I'm hopeful this forum can get a little better at understanding trade values and how they work... I'm sort of tired of all the lazy takes.

I don't think Rooker is available... but if he is, it's a package that likely mirrors what Olson went for a few years back. Perhaps the A's don't entertain the M's... Idk... but throwing around 7 top names is so dumb.
I may be annoying you but I also get a little of this  . When I hear about how JD the prospect hoarder was dumb for getting JT, Randy, JT C, and Yimi. Nope, they would have got Rooker, and Vlad . When all the other teams in the hunt asked about those same players and neither of them got moved.

Now, I would revisit BB about Rooker in the off-season. And yes, I would offer a huge trade pack with only Lazaro off the board. Something 3-4 top 100's and a few top 100 adjacent.

I would like to mention their Pythagorean looks like it will be 89 or 90 wins. And yes, JD mentioned that they were up 10 games with a .587 win percentage (paced for 95 wins). Hell, if they went .500 the rest of the year with plenty of loser squads on the schedule
they would have been in comfortably.

They lost 6 series in a row After June 19th to: (Cleveland OK) Miami, TB Twins, Balt= OK, Jays

2 game sweep of SD

LAA, Houston, Swept by LAA

They lost 9/10 series and 5 of those losses were against SUB .500 teams. Not to mention the two series against the Tigers where Riley was out for both and Carpenter was out for one of their series.

That is the squad absolutely shitting the bed. How do you think the Yankees would look if Judge was an 88 OPS+ hitter the 1st 4 months of the year? Julio's 1st 114 games he was at a .660 OPS.

The players shitting the bed is their own fault. And the mental lapses.

This team lost their shit and needed a change at the helm. Cal called it out around the A.S break.( the team has no energy) Julio broke in with a 147 OPS+ under Scott and DeFart. In his last 28 games not counting the finale he was a .990 OPS guy.

It was a lost year because your MVP player was a scrub until the last month. Too little too late. If they would have pulled the trigger at the All star break? I think with Edgar on board and a healthy pen they are primed for a run with a few changes to be made.

And throwing around 7 top names is precisely what I want to communicate: You can't force a competitor to be nice and give you a deal. The only way you are forcing an unwilling GM to trade is to say hey Billy what would it take. And Billy looks at it and says "I don't want to move him but if you want to force my hand". It wouldn't be a price the M's should be willing to pay.I happen to think it is dumb for people to spout off about how they would have convinced Billy Beane that whatever names they put down would have convinced him to trade Rooker and Jerry was too dumb to get it done. Or, the other one where people spout off about how Jerry has won the farm battle and he is hoarding prospects because X,Y and Z. Meanwhile most of us remember thinking it was an overpay in prospects when we got Luis Castillo. I think most of the attacks on JD are off base.

I still don't know if you know how absurd that reads.

They haven't robbed a single team in a trade as far as I can see.

Matt Olson for Shea Langaliers, Christian Pache, Ryan Cusick, Joey Estes...

Pache was a burn out former top 10 prospect who was traded when he dropped about 40 spots after a horrid rookie showing in Philli. In 4 years he's averaged about a .550 OPS in the majors with 4 teams other than the A's. Langaliers is the gem of the trade thus far, but even then, he's a career .708 OPS, 100 OPS+ catcher with some decent pop but nothing super special. He was a bottom-end top 100 prospect when traded. Cusick has yet to debut and boasts a career 5.13 ERA in the minors. Estes made 24 starts as a rookie in '24, posting a 5.01 ERA.

Chris Bassitt for JT Ginn and Adam Oller...

Ginn threw 34 innings of 4.24 ERA ball for the A's in '24. He has an ERA over 5.00 in the minors. Oller was DFA'd after last season. He posted an ERA of about 8.00 over 95 innings in '22/'23.

Matt Chapman for Gunner Hogland, Kevin Smith, Zach Logue and Kirby Snead...

Hoglund is a mediocre starter who pitched to a 5.18 ERA in AAA this year. He'll be at least 25 when he debuts, if he ever does. Smith was DFA'd after he posted a .546 OPS in Oakland last year... he's now with the Yankees. Logue was DFA'd after his first season in Oakland where he posted a 6.79 ERA over 57 innings. Kirby Snead pitched for the Mariners this year and didn't last.

Sean Manea for Euirubel Angeles and Adrian Martinez...

Angeles just posted a .685 OPS as a 22 year old in AA. He has a career .721 OPS in the minors. Martinez put up a 5.51 ERA over 112 innings for the A's in '22/'23 before being DFA'd.

Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino for JP Sears, Ken Waldichuk, Luis Medina, Cooper Bowman...

Sears has been a no. 4/5 type starter for the A's... throwing 350 innings over the past 2 years to a 4.43 ERA. Waldichuk has a 5.28 ERA over 175 innings for the A's the last 2 years. Medina has a 5.35 ERA over 150 innings for the A's the last 2 years. Cooper Bowman is now 24 and posted a .538 OPS in AAA in '24.

Your "being on record" that it would take 3-4-5 M's top 100 prospects is hilarious when you just look at the trades above. Only 4 of those players were ever rated on a top-100 list... Ken Waldichuck was not when he was traded, nor was Kevin Smith. Both briefly made appearances on singular lists in some years but then promptly fell off. Langaliers was back-end 100... Pache was top 10 for the Phillies, then fell to the bottom of the top 100 on most lists by the time he was traded.

So we're all just assuming the starting pitching will be as good next year as it was this year? I just don't see that as very likely.
It wasn't even THAT good if you look at ERA+ and home/road splits.

Castillo, Kirby and Gilbert can all be better. Woo and Miller will probably hold steady. I think you can also push these guys deeper to get more IPs from them and fewer from the middle of the pen

There's really no need to be conservative in projections when it comes to this rotation

Exactly, there is no f-ing way Rooker was untouchable or wouldn't have been traded for two of our top 5 prospects + a 10-15 guy given his age and lack of defense. Jerry opted to once again go cheap and hold on to all the top guys because of sUsTaInABilaTY....and because he is Stanton's idiot puppet.

Why isn't there... because the A's have such a history of trading everybody? Sorry, but I'm not buying complaining about a trade that wasn't made when nobody else in MLB was willing to match the price either

I remember thinking about how weak the return on Olson was. My thoughts were about the same as your perspective Shae is a legit catcher with pop. Pache was a name but had diminished value at the trade " I likened him to like a Taylor Trammell, or some such and then throw-ins. BUt you are not getting anywhere close to getting Rooker who had 39 bombs and 165 OPS+. They said they don't want to move him vs everybody knew that they were moving Olson, Manaea, etc

"Now, I would revisit BB about Rooker in the off-season. And yes, I would offer a huge trade pack with only Lazaro off the board. Something 3-4 top 100's and a few top 100 adjacent."

When Olson was moved he was coming off a 5.1 fWAR year where he hit .271/.371/.540/.911 for a 39 homer, 147 wRC+ season. Rooker just put up 5.1 fWAR but offers nothing of value in the field. Olson was also 2 years young than Rooker is now when he was traded.

The idea that he'd be monumentally more expensive than Olson is silly.

MLBTV gives Rooker a trade value of $21 million evaluation. MLBTV had Olson at about $46 million around the time he was traded.

The only difference contractually is Rooker will be traded with 1 more year of control... but like I said, he's older, people still wonder if he's a fluke, and he plays no position.

Why isn't there... because the A's have such a history of trading everybody? Sorry, but I'm not buying complaining about a trade that wasn't made when nobody else in MLB was willing to match the price either
We supposedly have the best farm system so could have outbid any other team. We need a bat more than any other team. Unlike 25 other teams that one move could have put us over the top and into the playoffs.
