a Rumors look at, it was a real, tale of two seasons, wonder what the heck went wrong the second half. He is probably worth about the $13 mil more or less, there is no reason for him not to exercise the option, its what the Mariners offered him. And it shouldn't make much of a difference in terms of their plans

Completely moronic contract executed about 5 minutes into the rebuild. So now we have $13M less to spend on actual good players.

JD flushed $80M on KK and White a combined 1.4 WAR. Hopefully that won't prevent ownership signing off on his future requests for significant multi year contracts.

The entire lineup this year had 11.5 fWAR They are losing Seager and you think they are going to put up 17.5 without any additions? That seems pretty optimistic. Ditto on the Rotation. they put up 7.3 WAR. You are losing Anderson who gave you 0.7 and adding 4 from Gausman which means you need to get 3.4 extra WAR spread out among the other 4 rotation spots to meet your projection of 14. Your projections would require just about everything to go right. No regression from anyone and most guys improving.
Yes, but they had negative WAR players like Long and Marmolejos. They also had Sheffield and McCaughan making starts. I don't see Marco only having 0.6 WAR, and I see Gilbert having more innings this time around to accumulate a higher WAR. I also don't see Kelenic having negative WAR, given his Sept.

I'll revisit this when the initial Fangraphs projections come out for the FAs, FWIW.
Your 9 man lineup and your 5 man rotation are not going to play 100% of your innings. you still have to fill out the roster with guys who will get some playing time due to injury, days off etc. Every team has multiple negative WAR players even the Giants who won 106 games had them.

True, the Mariners had -4.7 WAR from negative players.

The Rays had -2.7 WAR from their negative players.

Hey look at that, we would have made the playoffs just by eliminating some of the black holes.

As much as people want to point to the Rays as the model you should follow if you want to win a World Series - I call bullshit.

The Rays are a worse 2001 Mariners. Built to win a lot of regular season games, not built to take out the 3rd best offense in the league over a mandatory 5-game series.

This is why the M's need to sign superstars. They carry you.

At least they have the excuse of minimal revenues unlike us. They do the best they can with what they have and they have been about 10x better than us the past decade.

The Angels have only made the playoffs 10 times in 61 years. They have only made the World Series 1 time in 61 years. They have only won 4 playoff series in 61 years.

Mike Trout himself, has never won a playoff game.

You can make an argument that they're just about as sad of a franchise as the M's have been.
