Re: Encarcion to yanks
Money shouldn't have been that big an issue for the Mariners. If they wait until late in July, there will almost certainly be teams that are in contention for the post-season but need a little boost, either due to an inherent deficiency in their roster or due to injury. At that point, the M's could have cut a deal for an organizational top 10 prospect and perhaps without eating much of EE's salary to boot. Why are they penny-pinching now when they are supposedly setting things up to enjoy the revenue-enhancing benefit of (finally) once again being competitive in a few years? It just smacks of a lack of confidence in where the team is going.

Right. It shouldn't be. It is though.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2019 7:33 pmMoney shouldn't have been that big an issue for the Mariners.
With plummeting revenue I don't believe they really thought through the effect on the bottom line. There is not much appetite for injecting more cash into the business.
The key question is, do they really think they can have a true contender in two years? The way this is going that is a fantasy. I think we will see more payroll slashing regardless of the loss of talent or lack of return.

Yep I would imagine that the finance team set off alarm bells about the the acceptable lower band of profitability about to be breached due to the horrible play leading to lower than expected attendance and boom they now have lower payroll expenses and are now back on track in terms of the most important Organizational metric. Sorry but I think the notion that they are putting all of this saved payroll into a big piggy bank that the will break open and go crazy on massive FA contracts in 2021 is a bit optimistic.

There was no real need to rush a deal with EE. This ownership has no vision and no passion for winning. That is all.

Yes this is not about Saving (+). It's about cutting losses (-). 2019 will be a losing year with this payroll even as it is now with Felix, Leake, and Seager in particular. No way they can save it at this point, just have to keep the losses to a minimum.

If the owners believe that then we are even more fucked than we had thought.

I guess my overall feeling having watched this train wreck since the "step back" decision was made last fall is I just don't believe there is total buy-in from ownership. So many conflicting voices, cross currents, and moving parts. Sorry for the Business Babble but I just don't think they really have a plan. Or the plan keeps changing. I think there's a lot of disarray in the boardroom right now. It shows in their decision making.Sibelius Hindemith wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2019 9:14 pmIf the owners believe that then we are even more fucked than we had thought.

So for Jean Segura, we got J.P. Crawford, Isaiah Campbell, and Juan Then. Is this correct? How much salary did we end up eating?
In all fairness, Encarnacion was blocking the youngsters and helping us in the standings from getting a high draft pick. I understand that the Draft doesn't work the same way(*cough* David Gee *cough*), but still prefer the chance of getting the guy I want off the board first. Plus this a great opportunity to see the youngin's get some much needed playing time.
