Postmortem: Seattle Charmin v NYG

Post by auroraave » Mon Oct 07, 2024 2:37 pm

Man, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

"OMG - we're playing a shitty team at home! This is a guaranteed win, like 63-3!" And of course Seattle comes out flat and lays a GIANT turd. OH, see what I did there?

Are there any three words more terrifying in the Seahawk lexicon than "third and 17"? Ugh, you know damn well that spells doom.

Yup, the more things change the more they stay the same. Saw about three minute of the game, laughed, turned it off, took a ride up into the Santa Monica mountains. Three minutes was all I needed to see to know this episode goes - team does not show up, but the NYG do. I've seen this episode too many times to sit through another repeat. Not gonna do it.

This is not on the coaches, even though that's gonna be the easy, low hanging fruit of blame. Nope. MacDonald didn't fuck up. Grubb didn't fuck up. Harbaugh didn't fuck up. Well, maybe Harbaugh did, he kinda sucks. No, this is on the players. What I was was a complete and total lack of motivation, a complete lack of PRIDE. Pride now means PAID, and it's the current and future state of professional football - these guys ain't hungry - once you get paid in college - the hunger is gone. "Pay me and follow me on insta!"

You are seeing the NFL transition into a league of superior athletes who simply do not care. Sure, there are exceptions, but this is the new new in the NFL - this is the 'all about me' era and it's gonna suck. What would really make this better is 18 games of this, which, of course, we know is coming. The other solution is to move the extra point back another five yards - that kind of brave, out of the box thinking is what drives the league.

"OMG Walker only had seven carries! Fire Grubb NOW!" Well, I know this is going to come as a shock, but other teams often times do things called 'scheming" and "game strategy" to take away a team's strength. No, I'm serious! It's not just Seattle that does it! For realz! SO, the Giants likely strategy was 'take away the run game, make Geno beat us with that porous oline.' I know we don't believe it because the NYG coach didn't come out before the game and hold a press conference to announce the strategy, nor could it be cut-and-pasted from PFF, so it can't be 'a thing', so we're gonna have to agree to disagree on that. Pretty sure they game planned well.

Geno played pretty well - the slide was a tough one to swallow. DK did DK things, the oline did oline things, the defense refused to tackle, and special teams does not seem to be a strength right now.

But players have to show up and play - and they didn't. It's on them, period. Be as outraged at everyone else as you want, bang the "fire everyone" drum, but if you don't show up and do your job, the results are on you. No chance MacDonald didn't have this team prepared. No chance.

Now they'll beat the 9ers because no one is expecting them to and we'll see a sudden resurgence of 'pride" come Thursday night.

go hawks...

“Pay me and follow me on insta”. I’m gonna steal that one!

Couldn’t agree more. It’s like watching the Mariners. Guys who hit .199 with 25 dingers get paid…who cares if you strike out 185 times in the process?

The lackluster performance in front of the home game crowd makes it even worse, in my opinion.

DK Man-Child sulking on the bench after another costly fumble. Six years in the NFL and he still hasn't become a leader on this team.

But you made the conclusion it was the players lack of motivation rather than the coaching, okay

Yes.
There are some things I don't understand. (random as fuck)
What did the Giants do different that Geno couldn't step around the pressure and deliver like with the Lions?
Why was Daniel Jones so hard to sack? WTF was I imagining with this defense for the first two games?
Would the defense look better all of a sudden if Mafe and Murphy came back?
Why do people insist Witherspoon is something special?
Why do young coaches believe in "analytics" over common sense?

Anybody else think about Pete watching that game and chuckling?

The Giants seemed motivated. Perhaps they haven't been paid yet and were full o' vim n'vigor to prove themselves.

That was the thing about Pete, he might not have been the most sophisticated X's and O's guy, his gift was more the ability to get a team rolling and racking up wins on an emotional level. He was a motivator. That really is a key, that sort of consistency. Getting a team peaking Sunday to Sunday. McDonald seems like a great coach, but he seems low key. He is considered sort of the opposite of Pete. Does he have the ability to get an entire team emotionally peaking at the proper points in a season? We shall see

I also worry about motivation and such- Tons of injuries and our back/ups are just practice squad level talent. This season could get pretty dark. Who is going to light the fire Thursday ? Who can block Bosa and can we actually run the ball ? Assuming Metcalf and Warner will be at it by the first 3rd down of the game- Fun times.
