Vegas/Seattle

Post by DavidGee24 » Sun Jan 05, 2025 6:48 am

Vegas:

8th season
6 playoff appearances, soon to be 7 as they're in first place near the halfway point this season
3 conference finals
2 Stanley Cup finals
1 Stanley Cup

Seattle:
4th season
1 playoff appearance and 1 series win
that is all

I don't want to hear about "different draft conditions", Vegas decided from day one that they were going to put a great team on the ice every single year, and they don't let anything stand in their way. Seattle says "Well, let's be patient and build this thing slowly but surely and maybe in 5 to 7 years we'll have something"...which doesn't appear is going to happen.

Vegas has started players on its roster every single season. Seattle still has never had a star player. Their leading scorer has only 28 points in 40 games.

What few big moves Seattle has made have mostly backfired. Grubauer, Beniers, Stephenson, all big wastes of money.

Vegas is the best-run franchise in the league, Seattle is not the worst, but close to it.

I’m all for giving the kids a chance. Beniers, Wright, Kakko, Eeli,
And Ryker are all 25 or less. A healthy Vince Dunn could easily be an all star at 28. Our leading scorer is only 28. Vegas has hit correct on every move which is hard to do. Our time will come when our nucleus starts winning and building into a core. It’s still time to relax

And prospects like Catton and Firkus we should also look forward to, but there are no guarantees and it takes four lines of players to win.

I hope you're right and in a few years we have a team that's as good as Vegas has been, it just feels like the Kraken should at least be close to them already. At least we'll have Gru's contract off the books and hopefully they don't blow it on someone like Stephenson.

I'm not following them. What happened to the original group of youngsters they fielded? They went about the expansion draft differently than Vegas, it was supposed to get them a core group of young players to build around I thought. This should be their prime, doesn't sound like it was particularly successful.

They actually fielded very few youngsters in their first season, and the only ones 25 and under who ended up having a significant future with the team were Jared McCann and Vince Dunn. Just about everyone else was third-line and fourth-line fodder who had hit or passed their primes. They were somehow able to put it all together in their second season, make the playoffs, and have a nice run, but then all those guys got old fast. Meanwhile, Vegas actually went after good players in the draft and has had no problem since then with cycling out the scrubs and bringing in even more good players.

The Kraken seem to have built a really good farm system, although there's been some really bad luck in that in their four drafts they've twice gotten who was perceived to be the best forward in the draft (Matty Beniers and Shane Wright) but in the two other drafts the best forwards were generational talents (Conor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini). Not much has gone right for them, mostly because Ron Francis was a legend as a player but sucks as a GM.

Yeah, I thought they had collected draft picks. I seem to have misremembered it. Vegas actually collected more draft picks it seems. Here's a review of their expansion draft in 2021, it's not very kind, if anyone is interested

Coaching issues and team construction issues. Doesn’t look like it will be fixed this season either. Another lost year.
