Their lack of success at developing talent has nothing to do with Emerson. He's the seventh rated prospect based on his own talent and how it's viewed around the league. That's the issue with extending him.
Read Captain's list. Ick. Your blind faith in a guy that has given you zero reason to have any faith, let alone the blind kind? Is odd to me.

All I'll say is Colt's profile seems less volatile than Kelenic or White's.
White had a massive flaw in his swing.
Kelenic a massive flaw in his personality.
By all accounts, Emerson is pretty well rounded.

Why? Why now? You are missing the point. Everyone thought Justin Smoke, Jesus Montero, Dustin Ackley and a long list of others were talented prospects as well. Non of them did much of anything in a MLB jersey offensively. Sure would seem to make sense to not worry about locking someone up that really hasn't shown they need locked up, nor are they even close to not being locked up yet!Donn Beach wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2026 6:15 pm

Do you think developing 2 legitimate players in 10 years is better than mediocre?
First Round Picks.
Kyle Lewis - Bust
Evan White - Bust
Harrry Ford - Traded for a mediocre reliever- Still in the Minors
Cole Young - Jury still out but so far he has a .634 OPS and is graded as one of the worst defensive second basemen in the League.
Colt Emerson - Still in Minors
Jonny Farmello - Still in Minors
Tai Peete - Traded - Still in the Minors
Luke Stevenson - Still in Minors
Second Round Picks
Joe Rizzo - Bust
Josh Stowers - Bust
Zach Deloach - Bust
Edwin Arroyo - Traded away - Still in Minors
Nick Becker - Still in Minors
Ben Williamson - Traded .611 OPS in MLB
Tyler Locklear - Traded .532 OPS in MLB
Third Round Picks
Bryson Brigman - Bust
Cal Raleigh - Elite MVP Candidate
Kaden Polcovich -Bust
That's not a lot to show for ten years. Seems pretty mediocre to me. Without Cal it would be a disaster. He didn't do jack in Anaheim either. The only player he drafted in his 4 seasons there that became an everyday player was David Fletcher who was well below average accumulating just 10.3 WAR in 7 seasons with an OPS of .681
Lewis tore his knee up, they traded Marte, they traded the guy for Castillo. They had like a four year stretch where they used their first pick on pitching. Lately they have focused more on position players and I think it's showing. Sorry but it seems to simplistic to me to say they are good at drafting pitchers and lousy at position players. Dipoto might rub me the wrong way but I'm not down on his management these days. I have generally they are running a balanced farm system with both pitchers and position players developing

But on the positive side, he also had $30/M per season to spend that he wasted on terrible free agent and trade acquisitions.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2026 6:06 pmHere are the position players he's drafted in the first 3 rounds.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2026 5:23 pmYeah, for me it's moving the needle. I find it funny that people are all over his jock Like he is some genius GM because they finally won the division after 25 Years. Practically any GM could get their team to the playoffs if you give them 10 years. 2 trips to the playoffs in 10 years for the guy and people think he walks on water. Colorado has been to the playoffs twice in the last 10 years. So have the WhiteSox, the Marlins, the Diamondbacks and the Reds. Those are the garbage franchises that Dipoto's performance is on par with. Meanwhile Tampa Bay and Oakland who have a combined payroll less than ours have been to the playoffs a combined 8 times in the last 10 years. Why are M's fans so satisfied with mediocrity.Optimistic M's Fan wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2026 6:08 pmNot that my opinion matters, but I find it pretty funny half the people on here completely shit all over Dipoto no matter what he does. Its like a Democrat saying Trump is the devil, or a Republican saying Obama ruined the country. There is good and bad on both sides. Same thing with Dipoto. Is he always right? no.... is he a complete fuck up ruining our team?? uhhhh hell no. Dipoto has a budget of under 200 mil to work with and yet we are a fairly consistent winner the last 5 years. We aren't the Dodgers or the Yankees. But as Donn Beach said, we have 2 players who are the BEST at their position. We have a top 5 rotation. We have a top 5-10 bullpen. We have a top 10 farm system. We have a top 5-10 starting lineup. We have NO crippling contracts on our forecast as far as we can see. We have 30+ mil coming off our payroll this offseason freeing us up to afford to extend our core players. To completely shit all over what this team is accomplishing is ridiculous. 85% of fans in MLB would KILL to have their team in our position, yet half the people on this forum act like we are the fucking ROCKIES. Give credit where its due once in a while for fucks sakes. The sky isn't falling. We have a bright future. Griping that we locked our shortstop of the future up for likely 9 years and finding a reason to bitch about it is weird.

I wouldnt even complain if the Mariners left Seattle.
They don't deserve a team.

Yeah, stick with Dipoto and make it to the playoffs in ten years or churn through couple more GMs in those ten years to do it. Personally I'm content with sticking with him. I think it's about getting a system installed and I think they have a pretty good one. I'm really not concerned about debating what he did seven or eight years ago. They could have canned him then but they didn't. It's the franchise as it stands now that interests me.Captain 97 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2026 6:35 pmI find it funny that people are all over his jock Like he is some genius GM because they finally won the division after 25 Years. Re: Mariners extend Colt Emerson
Dipoto single-handedly cost the M's the Playoffs in 2016 when he traded away Mark Trumbo for peanuts and signed Adam Lind instead. Trumbo hit 47 Bombs and had an 850 OPS. Lind put up a .717 OPS for the M's and they finished a couple games out of the playoffs. Dipoto cost them the playoffs again in 2021 when He traded away their closer while they were only a game out of first place. The Bullpen blew several saves after that and they missed the playoffs by a couple games again. His strengths are in compiling a farm system and thinking about long term issues but he has a real deficiency in his ability to construct a complete roster. He has done some good no doubt but he lacks that killer instinct to finish the job and would rather look down the road than jump on an opportunity when it presents itself.
The M's have a Window here with their rotation. The reality is half these guys will be gone 3 years from now. You have a team that is close but not quite there. They need another Middle of the order bat and another reliever. but instead of going out and jumping on it and signing guys that can push them over the top during this window, they are giving money to a minor Leaguer in the hopes that it might pay dividends in 2031 and 2032.

You are content, and so all the thousands upon thousands that continue to spend money. That is a big reason why making the playoffs twice in ten years is OK. A big reason they were able to have the largest playoff draught in North American sports, and still turn a profit. You are not alone, but I'm not sure you are in good company either.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Tue Mar 31, 2026 6:52 pm
