From what I saw, there wasn't anything too bad. He said they didn't do a good job of helping to prepare the young foreign players in the past, and have tried to fix that. No big deal. Seager is probably in his last year. Everyone already knew that. Julio's English isn't tremendous... Yeah, that didn't need to be said, but wasn't really offensive. Only thing I saw that was really cringeworthy was what he said about paying for Iwakuma's translator. That was stupid.

He referred to Seager as a future Mariner HoFer. Wow, how insulting!

I watched and actually didn't see anything wrong.

Seager IS overpaid. We all know it.

And why pay an interpreter for a non-player that wanted to come back. The insulting part may have been that his English suddenly got better. But, the same could probably have been said of Ichiro. Was his English good enough by the end to do his own interviews too? Probably.. But he was worth it to them.

The way he said Julio's English is not tremendous didn't seem like a dig. Is it? I haven't watched him talk.

What did you guys actually find offensive?
Julio just turned 20 yo and has his own talk show which he conducts in English. He obviously has an accent but his English is as close to perfect as you can possibly expect from someone that has only likely been speaking it a few years.

Even if he couldn't speak English like 90% of Latin prospects, why would you even mention it. People are saying its racist, I guess you could call it that since everything is racist these days. I will just call it idiotic to say something negative and petty and INACCURATE about your top prospect.

He just made a bunch of unforced errors that in this environment will cost him his job.
I can definitely understand that too, especially if he speaks even acceptable English, why bring it up out of left field.

Hey, as far as I'm concerned I hope they're forced to sell.

The way I took it was Iwakuma wanted to come back but they weren't going to pay a translator and all of a sudden Iwak was ok with that.

I think its different for players than a guy that sounds like he asked to be a part of it.

Q: Baseball today has a lot of players from other countries, obviously from the Caribbean and Venezuela, but now from Korea and Japan, etc. What does the club do to help these players learn English?

KM: Some clubs are better than others. 20 years ago, if we signed a 16 year old in the Dominican, we’d send them to a dumpy old academy with no hot water and a lousy rock-filled field. Then when he was 18 or 19, we’d send him to Peoria, Arizona, put him up at the Hampton Inn, and give him $30 a day. He doesn’t even know how to make change! $30 a day for per diem, and surprise surprise they’d get in trouble because they wouldn’t know how to speak the language or make change or even buy dinner.

Yeah, I may need to read it again, but I don't think he said what he wanted to clearly. He didn't use the best words, but he didn't say anything overtly insulting or racist. Complaining about paying 75K a year was kinda weird though, and probably shouldn't have been the place for that.

Maybe it was the way he said it, but it didn't come off to me as insensitive as it does now that I read his words.

Definitely not saying I know his intentions either way either, could be a complete ahole, but the way I heard it he was just stating the reality of the times and how they're much better off now.

When Iwak was here they had about a $150M payroll. $75k is like a small business with 3 employees and a $150k payroll complaining about having to pay $75 a year extra for an employee's benefits. Just bizarre to be focused on it.
