Everyone keeps forgetting the one of the two things Jerry has done well, put together an analytics/scouting system that has brought in some really good players via the draft and international signings(except for the whole Ohtani debacle). The problem with any bad company is you keep using the cash from the good to try and help the bad...Jerry trades the top prospects to cover for his horrendously poor ability to ascertain and sign quality free agent hitters. So what he is doing is essentially robbing the future to pay for the present. Why doesn't he understand that quality free agents will make the team better and allow you to keep your top prospects here as opposed to trading them?bpj wrote: ↑Sun Nov 19, 2023 4:21 amHe's wasted far more than most teams GM's below the $200M payroll range over the last 8 years, I have zero doubts about that much.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun Nov 19, 2023 2:58 amOr it's the cost of doing business. Like a gambling system and just focusing on losing hands. If he's returning record profits maybe it's working.
Everything is working except for the players he actually spends money on who have almost all underperformed.
He still has a job, so he's definitely keeping ownership happy by "taking a step back" and cutting their payroll to where they're still $20M short of their 2018 payroll while maintaining the illusion of being competitive.
Since about 2020, payroll hasn't increased like anybody expected it to.
My guess is because they figured out they're not getting an adequate return on investment from the players he's given contracts to or taken on in trade.
They have an 8 year track record of failures, from Nori Aoki and Adam Lind to Marco and Evan White, without many successes in between.
I could be wrong, but really they might as well limit the damage (spending) since he's not getting any production from that part of his repertoire anyways.
But, you're right, it is more likely that they're just oblivious to all that and rolling in their record profits. At that point, what do they care.
Either way, that's why they don't just replace him to answer your question.
It's just not working for fans who care about winning.

I think it’s because he has made it clear that they believe in draft, develop and trade. If he signs a big name FA now? He has to admit that they years he didn’t do that he made a mistake.

Joe Doyle is a pretty respected name among Mariner media circles.
He won't respond to me when I ask him about this article.
I really wish I could get an answer.

If you look at most successful MLB teams, they can be compared to a three-legged stool. One leg is draft and develop. Another leg is trade for what you need. And the third leg is sign FA's to fill the holes. I've never seen anyone successfully sit on a two-legged stool without holding themselves up with their own legs! The M's are playing this game with a two-legged stool.

And one of the legs is shorter than the other because we have JD making our deals for usddraig wrote: ↑Mon Nov 20, 2023 3:41 amIf you look at most successful MLB teams, they can be compared to a three-legged stool. One of the legs comes with the stool. Every team gets and makes their draft picks. One of the legs (trades) you have to tear the cushion off the stool to get which makes the stool uncomfortable to sit on and the 3rd leg which we refuse to use you just have to buy. We would rather have a two legged uncomfortable stool than a 3 legged comfortable stool so Stanton can roll around in the team's financial statements admiring their beauty....

Look at the most successful teams. They add one or two players in the offseason to make the team better. In the M's case, they add players to fill roster holes.

We were never in on this guy - any intelligent fan knows this as its never been the M's FO way except for the rare times we got Beltre and Sexson or Cano. Our current GM more than any other is more a spread the money around type and doesn't believe in putting it all in 1 guy. Its sad because he sits there and says hey we want contact hitters and then goes and gets Urias. Its like wtf??
