The thing about these issues is as much as I think people are offended far too easy these days, it isn't my place to tell a Native American what they should be offended by. I mean, it is derogatory? Right?
If you went out to a reservation and asked them you would know

I had a native girlfriend and lived on the res for a time with her,

I asked, most did not care one way or the other,

There are really two types of people.
A. those that go through life doing the best they can, staying in their lane, minding their own business, being the best person/citizen/ they can be. Working, raising families, being responsible and kind and reasonable.

B. Those that are always looking to be offended - usually on behalf of a group they don't belong to - and 99% of the time it's just a hollow attempt to gain social or political capitol for themselves - not to make anything better. Just like BLM. Ever notice they don't actually have any plan or agenda, except to create chaos when the cameras are around? If they are so much about making black lives better - why aren't they fixing Chicago? Oh, right, no cameras.

Ever notice how those in group B never spend time in group A?
Ever notice group B never contains the intellectuals, the successful, the educated?
Ever notice how group A doesn't have time for that nonsense because they are working, raising families, contributing to society?

How are American Indians lives going to be better be eliminating the mascot?
Has anyone's life ever been improved by the changing of a mascot?
If your life is so fragile, so precarious, that a mascot determines your well-being - maybe the problem isn't the mascot, maybe it's you.

My grandmother was half Cherokee - straight out of Texas. Never once did I hear her complaining about any mascots - and we grew up watching the Braves on TBS. Never once has it occurred to me I'm supposed to be offended. I consider Redskins to be badass. The only thing offensive about the Washington DC football team is how it's run.

For those that think it's 'no big deal" you might want to start looking at just how much you are willing to give away to the nut jobs that think this is a problem, because eventually, they'll be coming for you. This is not about a mascot, this is about a tiny fraction of a percentage of a group of people trying to dictate to the other 99.9% of us how we should think and feel.

Allowing that to flourish is what you should really be afraid of. But yeah, keep laughing and playing it off. Or, just go along quietly with that .01% Last I checked, democracy is based on a majority - being offended by a mascot - in no way - reflects the majority view of Americans or anyone with a shred of common sense and a job.

Crime. Unemployment. Education. The economy. Health and wellness. Hunger. Cancer. Obesity. Homelessness. Shit that matters.

If you're worried about mascots - you're a moron. If you go along with it - you're an even bigger moron. Not one person actually benefits from this ridiculous 'fight' - except for the seven white guys trying to gain political or social capitol - which should be used to address the real problems pointed out above - ones that actually affect Americans.

But yeah, you go be all 'offended'.

^^^^^ Group B.

I guess that, since I actually have real Indian blood in me, and I am not offended - that makes me racist, right? You crack me up. Do you ever get tired of playing the same card over and over and over and over and over?

I guess a mascot in DC - which in no way affects you at all - or effects anyone - is more important to you than hunger, cancer, homelessness, unemployment, etc. Good to know! You should run for office in Seattle. Maybe City Council. They feel exactly the same way. #groupb

I agree, and if someone named their team the Rednecks, Honkeys or Hillbillies...I don’t think I’d find offense. But, I still don’t think it’s my place to tell a person of another race what they should find offensive when it describes their race.

I have one friend who’s Native American who finds all of it offensive...Chiefs, Braves, Redskins...all of it. He has every right to, just like others have every right not to. That is all I was saying.

All this " I have a friend .." is the empty equivalent of saying "I know a black guy" Not you specifically Michael K . I am not singling you out and I apologize if it appears so.

Bottom line is this is the 21st century. "Redskins" now today is a racial slur. End of story . There should not be a team named after a racial slur. A team should not be called "Indians" . No one refers to Native Americans as Indians anymore. Or at least you shouldn't be. Redskin isn't on a job application or a census question. No one is identifying as Redskin.

As far as not being offended by a team being named Hillbillies, Honkeys etc.. perhaps you would if those names were associated with the same violent history that is associated with names that were given Native Americans and Blacks in this country

How did 'Redskins' become a racial slur? It doesn't seem to have the history other terms do, for example, in the African and African American community. Those kinds of terms I'd oppose having a sports team represent, no question, why are we even discussing it?!

My sense of the 'Redskins' situation - one I admittedly haven't researched much, and mostly am just describing how it hits me from the hip - is that THIS term is something people picked to start being offended about. There isn't a history of the term being used derogatorily in the same manner as actual slurs, but rather (if overly simplistically) simply descriptively.

IFF that is a correct perspective, the conversation is dumb. As is 'Indians' - which is a historically accurate, yet technically inaccurate (which doesn't change the historical usage) people group descriptor.

(IFF I am wrong about the historical usage, then the application to the Redskins situation obviously falls aside.)

People get offended about everything these days. I'm not wanting to play along, but I do want to avoid causing unnecessary offense. The 'Redskins' thing seems like the start of a never-ending story, otherwise I'd be more sympathetic to the argument. Let's stick to eliminating pejorative terms rather than inventing new ones to ban.

You first misconception is that you think people are "offennded" . People are motivated not offended.
