I agree, but half the people watching from the stands have to read backwards! Can't they just put the words on the bottom of the TV screen? Or on the Screens in the stadiums?mostonmike wrote: ↑Mon Feb 10, 2025 6:40 amThere are 11 million deaf people in the USA - 3.6% of the population. It might be an idea to let them join in a little bit. The idea of the signer is to not only transcribe the words but to try to reflect the style and energy of the performer. I felt similar to you and didn't know that until I did a British Sign Language course last year and I met some people who get excluded from daily life because nobody teaches it in schools. It was quite an awkward and tough thing to experience but I am grateful to have met them.
Inclusion of this group is not the same as some of the woke nonsense that you see when you hear about DEI policies. They are entitled to a little bit of social media inclusion in one of the world's biggest events. Remember that they might not be able to enjoy it live like you have the benefit to, but this gives them some kind of way of enjoying it after the event.
Ok, it might look a bit crap on the 5 seconds they show on the tellybox and even if you are in the stadium, but have a look at this full performance. I am tempted to say that Matt Maxey's performance of Kendrick Lamar was better than Kendrick Lamar.![]()

Thanks for posting this. And good for you. I mentored a deaf grad student a few years back and, honestly, with all he taught me about the deaf and hard of hearing community, I feel that I was mentored as much as he was.

I skipped the halftime show but from what I hear it was really boring. I'm sure that the media is gushing over it just out of fear of offending black people.
It's one thing to have the ensemble of performers like Snoop Dog, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Mary Blige, etc., that was entertaining. To have some random rapper up there even if his rap is popular at this time just doesn't sound interesting at all, especially considering that they no longer really have actual music to accompany it. I mean, think of the rhythm section to "Bust A Move". How come nobody even tries to do that anymore?
Also, have they just run out of musicians and singers? Is everyone who's a great musician or singer just too old now? Do they ever ask the Foo Fighters if they want to do it?

Re: Super Bowl game thread
I see what you mean. But there is a massive difference between live captioning/subtitles and pre-recorded material. There is superb provision for pre-recorded material and its made compulsory by the FCC. Its easy enough for broadcasters and movie makers to provide captioning for that.
Live Captioning is incredibly difficult to do as it relies on people a bit like those in courtrooms to listen, get the wording accurate and then almost edit it to a readable speed as you can't read at the exact speed someone talks. Of course you might well know that "O say can you see" is coming up and but its not as easy as that, especially when you might have the lyrics to Kendrick in advance but you are not sure if he is going to actually follow those lyrics exactly in a live performance.

I didn't watch the game but I watched the highlights today and it was fun to see PHI up 34-0. It was also fun to see the patented Mahomes sidearm fail to work.

They should rename the half-time show the "American Culture is Dying Trash-time Show!".

Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2018. Before that, every winner had been from either classical music or jazz. (I had no idea.)
