So that dumb shit Maddon is using a six man rotation
Ohtani has made only three starts since June 2018, having undergone a Tommy John surgery later in that 2018 season and getting shut down as a pitcher after only two outings in 2020 because of a forearm strain. Whereas in past seasons he has pitched on a once-a-week schedule, this year he is scheduled to make normal turns through the Angels’ six-man rotation.

If I had Ohtani and that's what he needed, I might be accommodating also.

We're squeezing in 5 bums and Flexen. On purpose.

I don't mind giving starts to Kikuchi, Dunn and Sheffield right now. The other 4 guys we've used this year to start not named Paxton (Newsome, Margs, Mills, Flexen) that have been the problem.

Doesn't sound like it was about accommodating Ohtani as much as the same stuff I read about the Mariners reasons for using it
Although the Angels’ six-man rotation was borne out of the pandemic, Manager Joe Maddon is hoping it turns out to provide the benefit of actually helping the pitchers perform better.

With all pitchers facing a significant workload increase going from a 60-game season in 2020 to the normal 162 in 2021, the Angels decided the best way to manage that would simply be to add extra rest between starts by using an extra starter.

That begs a series of questions. Will pitchers who have been accustomed to a certain routine will be bothered by the extra rest? What happens when one or more of the pitchers performs so well that the Angels want them to pitch more regularly?

“It’s all interesting,” Maddon said. “I don’t have the answers specifically. Theoretically, in my head, it makes sense.”

I didn't think Managers were allowed to make such decisions anymore.

From last season, seems he is a real advocate of a six man rotation
When asked if he had considered a six-man rotation given the compressed schedule, Angels manager Joe Maddon revealed it was something he thought about doing before all of this happened.

“That was something I wanted to do anyway, Billy [Eppler] and I had talked about. I think we have the personnel to do that,” Maddon said on the most recent episode of Maddon Mondays.

I am fine with the 6 man last season and even this season IF we have six starters. But they are so mindlessly obsessed with it they went with a Bullpen day even though Sheff actually had a full 6 man rotation FIVE days rest. There is literally ZERO logic for that lunacy.

Thought there had been some resistance to the idea before that. Interesting Maddon talking about having the personal, since when have the Angels have pitching?

Trout, Ohtani, a 1B with a 1.000 OPS and a 16-19 record.

Speaking of Trout, he has already matched his 2020 WAR and is on pace for 12.5 WAR this season.
