Hot or Not in the Minors
Hot or Not in the Minors
There have been some great starts and crap starts in the Minors so far. I will start with position players. Perhaps someone can do the Pitchers after this.
HOT
Modesto
Cade Marlow is on freaking fire and should be promoted to Everett very soon. .371/1.135
Marte also killing it despite only being 19 yo .364/.985
Everett
Julliiioooo is crushing the ball. Already three bombs. I expect him to be taking up residence in the Ozarks by June. .333/1.131
Jack Larsen, a CF who is very old for the level at 26 yo is have no trouble with High A pitching. .367/1.057
Kaden Polcovich, our 2020 3rd round pick has a very nice .910 OPS with a couple of bombs.
Arkansas
Jake Scheiner - Perhaps he is our next 3B destroying the top notch pitching of the Southern League. .385/1.093
Bobby Honeyman - Checking in with an insane .517 OBP and a .947 OPS. Very nice
Tacoma
Well the hottest guy already got promoted but Dillon Thomas has had a fiery start at .381/1.262 Only 21 ABs though
NOT
Modesto
Juan Querecuto not handling the low A pitching. .174/.544
Everett
Zach DeLoach our 2020 2nd round pick isn't doing much yet. .209/.664
Tyler Keanan our 2020 4th round pick has had one good game and O fered the rest of the season. Terrible. .115/.534
Arkansas
Joe Rizzo - his fate is not looking good. They moved him to 1st base when he didn't even have the bat to play 3B. Only at .214/.639 this season.
Dom Thompson Williams - He should trade one of his last names for new bats. Horrific start. .167/.509
Tacoma
Luis Liberato once considered a decent prospect is pretty much a nothing now. .143/.518
Eric Filia with no X base hits. He should probably find a Women's Slow pitch softball team or something. .182/.515

Re: Hot or Not in the Minors
Almost forgot about Bishop. But he isn't a Hot or Not, more like a No More. LOL

Re: Hot or Not in the Minors
I'll give DTW some time. He missed 2019 as well with injury and wasn't in Tacoma last year. Schreiner came on strong in Modesto 2019 after Mariners acquired him. I'm not sure if defensively he's great at 3B or not, but they are giving him a chance to play there plenty. His only concern is strikeouts. His K rate has always been pretty high and is over 30%so far this year. To hit like he has as a righty in Arkansas(first week of games were at home) is pretty eye opening though.
Add to the hot or not, Taylor Doddard. He's been great so far in Modesto. That's going to be a fun unit to watch with him Carlson, Casseta-Stubbs, Phillips, etc...

Re: Hot or Not in the Minors
Scheiner spent 2018 at A-ball Lakewood where he slashed .296/.372/.470. He slugged 13 home runs. An impressive 15.7 K% and 9.5 BB% suggests a player with strong plate vision and discipline. His 140 wRC+ ranked among the Top 12 in all of Class-A ball.
The biggest knock on Scheiner will certainly be his age, as he’ll turn 24 in August. You’d like to see Scheiner take another step forward this season, and accelerate his promotion schedule as he reaches the proverbial end of his “prospect” status. He’s struggled early on in 2019, slashing .256/.326/.353 in 44 games at High-A Clearwater.
“Ok, there’s a hint of a Kyle Seager type trajectory in there,” he said. “That may be wishful thinking, but there’s a line you can follow.”
Scheiner’s bat will ultimately dictate his ceiling. His range at the hot corner can be suspect at times. In fact, only 50 percent of Scheiner’s playing time this year has been at third, the rest being played in the outfield and at first base. With Rizzo reasonably entrenched at third base in Modesto, you can expect that to continue in the Seattle organization.
In speaking with one NL scouting coordinator, it would appear Scheiner is probably more than some lottery ticket pick-up.
“Ok, there’s a hint of a Kyle Seager type trajectory in there,” he said. “That may be wishful thinking, but there’s a line you can follow.”
Scheiner projects as a high-OBP utility man with moderate power.
While neither Baseball America or MLBPipeline ranked the infielder in the Phillies Top 30 Prospects entering the season, he will likely slot into the very back of Seattle’s Top 30 list.
The Mariners will also send roughly $18 million to the Phillies. Bruce had about $21 million remaining on his deal.

Yeah, this is a good thread and it is fun watching the ups and downs of these minor leaguers. It's great that high A and triple A are both so close to Seattle.

This is awesome, looking forward to people doing updates throughout the season

Re: Hot or Not in the Minors
Well, we haven't had much pitching yet to go on in the minors....
Let's start with our top prospects and where they're at.....
1) Emerson Hancock: Everett Advanced A
2) Logan Gilbert: MLB Debut
3) George Kirby: Everett Advanced A
4) Juan Then: Everett Advanced A
5) Brandon Williamson: Everett Advanced A
6) Connor Phillips: Modesto Low A
7) Isaiah Campbell: Everett Advanced A
8) Levi Stoudt: Everett Advanced A
9) Adam Macko: Modesto Low A
10) Wyatt Mills: Tacoma AAA
11) Ty Adcock: Modesto Low A
12) Sam Delaplane: Tacoma AAA
13) Sam Carlson: Modesto Low A
14) Tim Elliot: Everett Advanced A
15) Logan Rinehart: Unassigned
16) Matt Brash: Everett Advanced A
So 16 of our top thirty prospects are pitchers with half of them at Everett/ Advanced A. Half the remaining 8 are at Modesto... Tacoma has two, one is on the MLB roster (Gilbert) and one is yet to be assigned (Rinehart). I see no premium pitching prospects at AA Arkansas right now. Interesting. Forgetting the ratings, who is off to a good start?
I see nobody at Tacoma off to a good start....unless you are reaching... Vinny Nittoli? Unless you have nothing but time, don't bother ... Tacoma is going to be a way station for the Mariners and they are close at hand and easy to monitor. I do like the fact that most of the minor league teams will be playing 5 game series and then moving on. Seems so smart to me, cuts down on travel trips, each team plays through the other's rotation, cuts costs, and covid exposure... Anyway, here goes... Tacoma is absolutely loaded with insurance, at least 13 pitchers on the staff with major league experience, many still in the beginning stages of their careers.... others with 4-5 years MLB experience, guys like Yohan Ramierez to Roenis Elias, guys from Sam Delaplane to Matt Festa. Youngsters like Joey Gerber and flamethrowers like Domingo Tapia. Whoever is in stroke will be the next man up and Tacoma is holding their own at 4-4 currently in the AAA PCL.
1) Ian McKinney AA Arkansas has two starts. He has struck out 18 in ten innings and has an overall era of 2.00 with guys hitting .162 off him. If he keeps that up, we will begin to hear about him. Penn Murfee and Alejandro Requena are showing some signs of competence. It's still too early to see consistency and one slip up thows the numbers askew. Arkansas is stocked with veteran minor league talent, insurance, solid up; and down and off to a 6-3 start.
2) George Kirby at Everett A+ has two starts. He's one and one, striking out 12, walking one in 8 1/3 innings. The big news was him giving up a BB which he never did in his pro career to date,. George's velocity is up....he's a 98-102 mph monster now with almost pinpoint control..at 6'4" and 220 lbs, I expect him to knock someone off the M's roster in August or sooner. High ceiling if his stuff has enough movement to fool Major League hitters. Everett is loaded and off to an 8-2 start.
3) Levi Stoudt and Tim Elliott have made a couple starts and in 8+ innings, opponents are hitting right around .200 against them. It's all early stuff, but noteworthy.
4) Modesto's 20 year old Adam Macko sports a 3.24 ERA and has struck out 17 in 8.1 innings. 22 year old Taylor Dollard has a 1.00 ERA and has stuck out 18 in 9 innings. 22 year old 2nd rounder Sam Carlson is just out of the gate with 4.2 innings and 7 strikeouts. Likewise, Damon Cassita-Stubbs is out the gate with 7 strikeouts in 3 and a third innings. 20 year old Luis Curvelo hasn't given up a run in 7 innings. 21 yr old Josias de los Santos has only given up 2 runs in 9 full innings with a 2.00 ERA. Point is Modesto is loaded with young talented pitching and that along with Marte and Marlow are reasons why they are off to a 7-3 start.
As far as who's not hot..... I think that info would be better later down the road. This is just a starter....I think the M's minor league record is current a combined 25-12 so they must be doing something right.
Re: Hot or Not in the Minors
Ian McKinney is probably the most interesting arm in Arkansas, at least among starters. 5th round lefty for SL about 8 years ago. Didn't do much in their system, but Mariners got him as a ML FA I believe in 2019. He did really well in modesto, and faired fairly well in Arkansas at the end of the year. Great start so far. Only 1 run off a solo HR. Not sure if he has whats needed to make it to MLB, but he may get a chance at a short stint if there are enough injuries at the right time.
