The Mariners have lost four starters with their inane six man rotation and bullpen games
.

Thought we were talking about the Rays, don't give a shit about the Mariners six man rotation. The deal is innings management, how teams go about it. It gets back to that issue

There is Dave Roberts talking about it
["There's gonna have to be a little bit of bullpen gymnastics, pitching gymnastics, as far as the season," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "This is an unknown -- this season, coming off of last year. I think the ultimate goal that the players, the organization are aligned in is the fact that we want our guys, our pitchers, to be as sharp and as fresh and as strong for September, the postseason run. How you get there, how we get there, can be debated. We're gonna have to be nimble."]. [/quote]

To me the issue isn't dumb strategies, it's a lack of talent, particularly pitching depth.

Is limiting pitchers' innings (or pitch counts) liberal or conservative? Maybe it's progressive socialist because they are spreading the innings among more pitchers.

Well the Rays have nothing to do with this thread so maybe start a new one.

I think they should, look around baseball, see what's going on

I don't have the bandwidth. Are they stringing out starters innings so they can win a "participated all the way until the end of the season" ribbon? If not it is irrelevant.

If they were concerned about looking around baseball to see what's going on, maybe they'll notice how the majority of the other teams are using normal rotations and stop their stupid experiment.

I kind of get both methods. They have a goal for Gilbert and aren't wavering - I can get behind that if it pans out... but it is the Mariners after all. They really have a knack for fucking up everything they touch.

I do however think the M's strategy lacks in one key area: competitive nature of athletes.

I get really worried when a guy like Justin Dunn is telling reporters that he couldn't go anymore innings because he got really tired legging out a double and spending a half an inning standing on second base... no idea why he would want to broadcast that. It would be refreshing for Dunn to have had a face to face in the dugout w. Servais and then tell reporters at the end of the game he was pissed he had to come out. What we experienced was quite literally the opposite... a 25 year old "athlete" telling reporters he didn't have the juice to go past 71 pitches in a game... oof.

I stopped playing baseball when I was 14 to pursue competitive golf full time. When I was 17 I was asked to play on a summer ball team and when we showed up to the first game the manager (who we had never met) asked if any of us could pitch. 4 or 5 members of the team point to me and say "he's a pitcher" (I literally hadn't thrown a baseball except for the occasional game of catch for 3 years). Without a hitch I said, "yep, I can pitch." I go out there and throw 7 innings of 3 run baseball and probably threw around 100 pitches purely on adrenaline. After the game, the manager turned bright white when he found out I hadn't thrown in such a long time... but you know what, I was an athlete and my competitiveness fueled me to go out there and deliver.

Fucking exactly. Not saying Gilbert should be throw complete games but my God you can't simultaneously foster a win at all cost attitude while babying the F out of this guys like they are Albinos hiking nude across the Sonoran Desert in August!

What I am saying is the issue is managing innings. If you want to contend managing innings is stupid fine. But I think that position runs contrary to how every team is run these days including the two that made it to the WS, one with the smallest payroll and one of the largest. They can use a five man rotation, a six man or whatever man. Whatever they decide to use they are going to manage innings. It's the way it's done now

So we hate when SS doesn't baby Kelenic and puts him in leadoff, then we hate when he does baby a starter by pulling him after 4 innings and about 70 pitches? Pick a side. I get that its maybe a bit inconsistent between the 2 and its not and apples to apples comparison, but do you want him to throw these players into the fire, or ease them in?

This is the same approach that he took with Marco Gonzales. In his first 5 starts, he only went 5 innings once, and didn't reach 70 pitches until his 5th start.
