Making the playoffs isn't good enough. Personally i don't get excited at the prospect of scraping in as the 7th best team and taking an early exit because you don't stand a chance against the quality organizations. You need ace pitchers in the post-season and this team doesn't have any, so by all means they should handle the guys that may become aces in such a way as to set them up for the most success farther down the line.

There have been hundreds of Aces in baseball history. If Gilbert becomes one, he will be the first Ace that was handled like a sickly little girl during his first few starts.

I'm sure the Yankees handled Roger Clemens like that!

As most people know Clemens broke in with the Red Sox. In his first four starts he pitched 5.2, 7.0, 6.2, 6.2 innings and pitched complete games in his 8th, 14th, 15th, 19th and 20th starts. Yes, that is 5 complete games as a 21 yo.

Miraculously he survived this forced labor and these War crimes against him to go on to pitch almost 5k innings with 118 Complete games, 46 shuts, over 4600 Ks and 354 wins.

When you have a team developed that averages six runs a game, you go out and spend your reserve payroll on a couple aces... The Astros did it with Cole and Verlander, the Diamondbacks did it with Randy and Curt Shilling. The Padres are trying this year with Darvish and Snell.You marry position players, some are faithful.. you change you luck with pitchers, most are whores...
