"Right shoulder discomfort"
More like roast beef labia soreness ya big fuckin pussy. Sheesh.
I hear you, and I'm pissed about it as well. But we're both assuming Dunn asked to be taken out of the game. Coulda been that SS noticed something was up with Dunn, asked him when he got to the dugout, Dunn admitted to feeling a little discomfort, and SS made the conservative decision to take him out. For all we know Dunn could have been insisting he go back out.
The way he was pitching, I'd give it an even chance.
No doubt that sounds like a reasonable conclusion. What's crazy is these little "discomforts" become nagging injuries that end up as surgery.
Hopefully he can play with it this year.
Yeah. It's like managers are under directives to preserve investments in player health at all costs.
It reminded me of an anecdote I felt compelled to share, from the third game of the 1951 NL playoff between the Giants and Brooklyn, Italics are mine:
Don Newcombe had pitched a complete game four days earlier, in Philadelphia, followed by 5+2⁄3 innings in relief the following day during the last game of the regular season. In the eighth inning of this game, on only two days' rest he attempted to take himself out of the game, but Robinson demanded that he continue: "You go out there and pitch until your fucking arm falls off!"
It's apocryphal. Newcombe himself insisted that he never asked to be relieved. Duke Snider and Andy Pafko corroborated that.
Now Newcomble was a big strong dude - 6'4", 240 - not a wisp like Dunn. Still. It was a different age.
