8/18 Mariners Sniffing 9 Games Over, Again vs. Rangers Game Thread

Seager getting hot down the stretch.
Only problem in previous seasons was the team didn't hang on long enough to capitalize on it.

Yes I understand that, but it seems the M's are filling all their holes with average players who are already in house and hoping for a miracle from a couple of them.D-train wrote: ↑Thu Aug 19, 2021 12:14 amEven if Toro is only average, he only costs $500k a year which allows you to go out and get very good players that cost a lot. You can't fill every hole with $20-30M guys just like you can't fill every hole with average players...TraderGary wrote: ↑Wed Aug 18, 2021 11:33 pmSo then that begs the question, if we have a lineup full of average players, minimum wage or not, how is that going to help us contend next year, which is and has been the stated goal by the Mariners organization. If we're filling all our holes with "average" players like you believe Toro to be, logic would dictate that we're going to be an "average" team again next year. How does that make us better?bpj wrote: ↑Wed Aug 18, 2021 11:07 pmI don't t think anybody expects any of these guys to be much more than they are now.
That's why we want to add a couple good players in free agency or trade, because we need a couple plus players to push us over the top.
What Toro is, I believe, is a player than can be average at 2B or 3B the next couple seasons at minimum wage, one less black hole that needs to be filled in free agency/trade.-
Catcher - Raleigh/Murphy/Torrens
1st base - France/White/Marmo
2nd base - Toro?/Moore?/Simien?
SS - Crawford
3rd - Toro?/Seager?
LF - JK/Lewis
CF - Lewis/JK
RF - Haniger
4th OF - Fraley
In the wings - Julio
DH - ?
Other than 2nd base, I can see them going with their current in-house options, unless they move Haniger in the offseason. And they've already stated that they won't be using a full time DH, and will use it to give players a day off. So if Toro proves to be just an average player, that's one less position we can fill with a player who's going to help put them over the top.

One position player and one pitcher and you can add 8-10 wins if you get good ones.TraderGary wrote: ↑Thu Aug 19, 2021 12:28 amYes I understand that, but it seems the M's are filling all their holes with average players who are already in house and hoping for a miracle from a couple of them.D-train wrote: ↑Thu Aug 19, 2021 12:14 amEven if Toro is only average, he only costs $500k a year which allows you to go out and get very good players that cost a lot. Cruz+Musgrove would have done that for us this season for under $20M.
There are plenty of options available again this offseason.

Yeah if they do that then they deserve all the criticism they will get. Only France is above average. Julio likely will be but he won't be ready until mid next season probably.TraderGary wrote: ↑Thu Aug 19, 2021 12:28 amYes I understand that, but it seems the M's are filling all their holes with average players who are already in house and hoping for a miracle from a couple of them.D-train wrote: ↑Thu Aug 19, 2021 12:14 amEven if Toro is only average, he only costs $500k a year which allows you to go out and get very good players that cost a lot.
