I always thought Seager reminded me a great deal of Graig Nettles, with both, bat and glove. Here’s a comparison of their first 11 seasons (68-78 for Nettles) From first blush, are a lot of similarities, and some offensive stats line up surprisingly close, but I’d have to dig through the rest. Seager does fan a lot more.

Wow! The offensive numbers are nearly identical but look how much better defensively Nettles was. He has to be one of the best all time!

Edgar is an amazing hitter no doubt.

But you also have to take into account that aside from 2001-2003, Ichiro hit in some of the worst lineups in Major League History. It's got to be easier taking walks and seeing better pitches when you are hitting around Jay Buhner, Ken Griffey Jr and Alex Rodriguez in a juiced up era of baseball. Ichiro might have hit .400 in some of the 90's M's lineups.

How bout the 2010 M's:

So if Ichiro wasn't getting as many good pitches to hit, he should have been drawing more walks. That's on him.
It's kind of not though.

Better lineups have inflated numbers through out. Bad lineups drag everybody down.

The '97 Mariners had one hitter hit below a .800 OPS. Joey Cora had an .800 OPS. You think Ichiro wouldn't have outperformed Joey Cora in that lineup?
A lot of players think it matters but the statistics don't seem to bear that out...

Besides, Ichiro only put up marginally better numbers in NY, where he undoubtedly had better hitters around him, than he did in his final 2 seasons with the M's and that can be explained by his playing half his games in Yankee stadium.

He was 38-40 years old in NY and well out of his prime. That's not a fair comparison.

If you took 2001-2010 Ichiro and put him in the Mariners lineup of the 90's he likely hits .400 multiple times and smashes every hit record in existence. Yet he basically did that anyway and did it in some of the worst lineups ever.

Without the benefit of deep stat analysis at the time, all we had was video (use of which was pretty new), film, and 'expert' analysis. But I do remember him being favorably compared defensively to Brooks Robinson by his peers at the position. Schmidt was still gaining a name for his defense, so I don't recall him being discussed, but in hindsight, I think these three very well were the best defensively of all time.

He hit .350 with great players hitting behind him in 2001. Dream on.

Yeah, he also won the MVP. Led the league with 242 hits and had a .838 OPS as a rookie.

That lineup also wasn't as good as some of the 90's lineups. They had an .805 OPS. '97 had a .839 OPS. '96 had a .850 OPS.

He hit .372 on a team w. a .727 OPS. If you don't think he wouldn't have had even better numbers on way better offenses you're the one dreaming. They built HORRIBLE teams around him.

OK, so K rates is no big deal, but why was it that time after time, early in the year, Seager would swing at a pitch low and in another time zone for strike three? It seems to me that a hitter who is aware of how he is being pitched to would make adjustments long before three months have gone by. Yet for Seager, this happens year after year.

Now I guess you can't complain if the numbers he puts up compensate for his suckage earlier in the year, and they do. Would I prefer someone who is consistent? Hell yes! But then again, perhaps he is auditioning for another team to pick him up at the trade deadline? You have to admit that a guy who gets hot at the end of the year could be in much demand to help carry a team to a WS spot!

Photos of that dive stop at 2:30 were splashed across probably every sports page in the country the day after.

Anyway, back to Kyle Seager. Or Ichiro. Or... :D
