Offseason Plans
Re: Offseason Plans
Scherzer is going to be a hard sell. They say that the older pitchers want to be on a team with a good chance of winning the WS. I'm not sure how he personally feels about it, but I'd say the M's are definitely an underdog.
Re: Offseason Plans
Yeah I agree and I can't imagine JDs first big signing since CJ Wilson is paying a 38 yo pitcher $35-40M a year.

M's have no chance, imo, to sign Scherzer
BTW, The Yankees top free agent targets are reported to be Robbie Ray, Carlos Rodon, Mark Semien, Corey Seager, and Freddie Freeman....

Re: Offseason Plans
They could offer Max a 1 year deal for $100M and he would instantly take it so there is always a chance.AT Funchal-Madeira wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 7:12 pmM's have no chance, imo, to sign Scherzer

And maybe all five of those guys grew up hating the Yankees just like we did and they would quit baseball before going to the Bronx.
The Yankees won 2 more game than us and we both would have won 91 games if Mitch didn't fall on his ass going for a routine fly ball at the game Chad and I went to at Yankee Stadium. So I don't see them having some huge advantage over us recruiting FAs this off season because they won a lot of WS titles when the current FAs were in grade school.

Boy do I wish MLB had a hard salary cap.
That said, they have an old, decaying roster and not a lot of talent in the farm. I wouldn't sign with the Yankees right now.
Re: Offseason Plans
I like bpj's idea of getting Schwarber (est. 2.5 WAR), which would upgrade Torrens and project the total to 92.5 wins.ice99 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 6:26 pmLet me preface this by saying to take these WAR estimates with a grain of salt.
As a baseline with no moves (other than Seager buyout), the lineup looks something like:
JP, SS, 3.0 WAR
France, 1B, 3.5
Haniger, RF, 3.0
Toro, 2B, 2.0
Kelenic, CF, 2.0
Murphy, C, 1.5
Fraley, LF, 1.5
Torrens, DH, 1.0
Moore, 3B, 0
Current lineup, 17.5 WAR.
If they sign Gausman, then
Gausman, 4.0
Marco, 3.0
Flexen, 3.0
Gilbert, 3.0
Dunn/Sheffield/Brash/Kikuchi, 1.0
Rotation 14 WAR
According to Fangraphs top bullpen in terms of WAR was the Rays at 7.9 WAR. The M's came in at 7.0 WAR. I'm predicting some gain at 7.5 WAR.
A zero WAR team is supposed to be good for 47.7 wins. Give the bench 0.3 WAR.
This gives a baseline with Gausman is 87 wins.
Adding Semien (est. 4 WAR) allows Toro to move off 2B to 3B, displacing Moore. This brings it up to 91 wins.

Re: Offseason Plans
The entire lineup this year had 11.5 fWAR They are losing Seager and you think they are going to put up 17.5 without any additions? That seems pretty optimistic. Ditto on the Rotation. they put up 7.3 WAR. You are losing Anderson who gave you 0.7 and adding 4 from Gausman which means you need to get 3.4 extra WAR spread out among the other 4 rotation spots to meet your projection of 14. Your projections would require just about everything to go right. No regression from anyone and most guys improving.ice99 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 8:25 pmI like bpj's idea of getting Schwarber (est. 2.5 WAR), which would upgrade Torrens and project the total to 92.5 wins.ice99 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 6:26 pmLet me preface this by saying to take these WAR estimates with a grain of salt.
