Tru dat. I thought of that as I was posting this response. But Ichiro would a statistical blip. Seriously. Plot a graph of success in Japan (or Korea) on one axis and immediate success in the majors and do a regression analysis. Ichiro is somewhere stratospherically on another graph somewhere. Up there with Ohtani. Most struggle - at least initially. They haven't come through the American farm system

I think this is why so few Japanese players make the leap - whether they are pitchers or position players. It's different baseball. I think many could and do make the transition eventually, but are we willing to invest in a guy who may take a season or two to really start hitting while we are simultaneously waiting for Kelenic to figure it out, Lewis to get back in his groove and JRod to get the mid-season call up?

Ichiro was a freak.
Hideki Matsui was good his first year as well.

Hideo Nomo wasn't bad, 236 strikeouts his rookie season...but yeah, its not a given a player comes to the majors and shines

Two things are indisputable.

He won't be as good as he was in Japan.

He will be better than most of our lineup.

He could easily help solve the lack of quality bats in our lineup. It’s likely he will be on the west coast and a very good chance he is in our division either as a Angel or Ranger as Texas is in need of outfield power as are we. I’d rather he be a 3rd cog in our wheelhouse than be a constant menace in our division.

Another extreme long shot out of Japan is Tomoyuki Sugano who was posted last year and didn’t sign. He has the opportunity to come this off-season as an unrestricted free agent.

He definitely isn't a UT. Not seeing any CF or INF since 2014. Pure corner OFer.

You could probably say the same thing about Torrens, France, White and Dilly. Just change the positional flexibility. Until you see film and try them out somewhere you just don’t know. Ice suggested he wasn’t worthy to play ss because of his being error prone.... I’m not sure how to find anything in Japan to prove one way or another whether he can be a UT. His past suggests he can. But if he hasn’t played anywhere but right field for over 7 yrs than that might provide more questions than easy answers

Again, can he play any 1b? We don't need corner OF help
What did you see this year that makes you say we don't need corner outfield help?
He’s convinced obviously. Curious if this gets an answer

If he can come close to hitting like he did in Japan I don't care if he can only DH.
