Yes, Arroyo and Perez are a couple of the VERY few bright spots in terms of hitters in the system. The Travs lineup in the link below is a complete graveyard right now the Rainiers hitters are just flotsam and jetsam. This includes former top prospect Jarred Kelenic who is 1-9 with 6 Ks in AAA right now. I wonder if he is starting to have fun yet.

It's really too soon to judge these low-A prospects, either good or bad. I do like Perez though, mostly because of his strikeout rate. And obviously the early results from Arroyo are good to see. But like I've been saying in a couple of other threads, most major leaguers get 1500 - 2500 minor league PAs.

He's going to be down there awhile. I think he needs to hire a sports shrink.

Are you thinking Robert Perez Jr, or Milkar Perez.

Robert Perez Jr.

Milkar Perez is interesting too. He seems to have 80-grade pitch recognition but is apparently so reluctant to swing that he almost never hits. It's weird for a kid from the island.

The speculation with the Baseball Prospectus guys is that Kelenic can't pick up spin on breaking balls, especially low in the zone. One piece of evidence they trot out is that literally every report they had on him in the minors mentioned an unusual amount of swing and miss on breaking balls low in the zone, but everyone (including them) ignored that issue because his hit tool overall was thought to be so strong. What's less clear is if this is in fact the underlying problem, can it be fixed or at least mitigated to a sufficient extent?

I DO NOT believe for one second that JK just needs a mental breather and to start having fun again. I think that is the very definition of spin from the Mariners.

What about his K rate do you like? Seems he strikes out more than average.

Milkar seems to be great discipline and good defense. Will he hit enough is the question

Perez's k-rate is up to 25%, which is okay for the level but not outstanding. But a few weeks ago I ran the numbers for the whole team and he was at 21% I believe, and at that moment in time was about 5 percentage points below most of the rest of the team, that were all striking out like crazy. But I should have known not to trust small sample size like that without going back and checking.
