Nah. He may have a contract but I doubt he's truly locked in if he wants to leave.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 2:10 amHe's locked in with the mariners now that he has been given the title of president

It's not the contract, it's the title, it makes it more difficult for a team to poach him, it would need to be a promotion, hard to top president.
. Technically, Epstein was traded for three minor leaguers, but the sport maintains a professional courtesy to allow executives to pursue job openings at other clubs if it involves a promotion. Privately, executives acknowledge that has led to a bit of titular chicanery in which roles are given elevated titles to pry talented executives from rivals or to play defense against such poaching

But he could finally leave the remote isolated outpost of Seattle and rejoin the continental US. How could he refuse that right??? lol Insane to stay in Seattle when you can move to Boston!Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sat Jan 07, 2023 3:43 amIt's not the contract, it's the title, it makes it more difficult for a team to poach him, it would need to be a promotion, hard to top president.

What title could Boston offer as a promotion? Czar?

"Rich" would probably work.

I think the Boston job would mainly be about status and, presumably, more financial freedom year to year. That last point is speculative though, as I think the Red Sox have made it clear they aren't going full Mets with their payroll anytime soon.
Re: The True Cost of Draft, Develop & Trade
Another possibility is the White Sox if there is a sale of the franchise. Reinsdorf is 86 years old and from what I understand the majority of his wealth is tied up in the Bulls and White Sox. He might want to settle that situation soon for his estate. Or he might not give a crap. But given his age it seems likely there will be some kind of change in the next few years, and it doesn't take much imagination to sort of visualize how that franchise could really be unlocked.
Re: The True Cost of Draft, Develop & Trade
Yeah it is silly to think he wouldn't go unless he had a more prestigious title.

You guys are really missing the point, read that again. It has nothing to do with dipoto wanting a better title. It's about what it takes for another club to talk to him in the first place, how the mariners can protect themselves from that happening. In order for another club to approach him they need to be in position to offer a promotion. It doesn't matter what dipoto wants, this would be between the red Sox and the mariners, they haven't gotten to talk to dipoto yet.
The cubs poached Epstein by being able to offer the title of president, the mariners are playing defense by giving him the title of president in the first place. Technically, Epstein was traded for three minor leaguers, but the sport maintains a professional courtesy to allow executives to pursue job openings at other clubs if it involves a promotion. Privately, executives acknowledge that has led to a bit of titular chicanery in which roles are given elevated titles to pry talented executives from rivals or play defense against such poaching
