Re: 2023 MLB Draft
One of the more intriguing players for the Mariners in the upcoming draft is Virginia catcher Kyle Teel. Prospects Live ranks him as their 22nd best prospect in the 2023 draft class. They praise his offensive ability, saying, “Teel is a professional hitter with high contact rates and he really avoids punch outs. He’s still learning and maturing into the slugger he’ll eventually be, developing a profile at the plate.”
Joe Doyle has been praising Teel so far this season, and even spoke about him on his MLB Draft podcast Over-Slot. He is having a monster season at the plate for Virginia. The lefty hitter who swings similarly to former Mariner third baseman Kyle Seager is slashing .457/.527/.728 with five home runs in just under 100 plate appearances. He also has walked more than he has struck out, which may catch the eyes of the Mariners front office.
The best part about Teel is his offensive potential. There are doubts that he can stick at catcher for the long haul and think that he will need to move to a different position. The good thing is that he is athletic and should not have a problem if he has to change position. However, he has not been a bad defender behind the plate this season, and has thrown out plenty of base runners.

Re: 2023 MLB Draft
For sure!! Keep the pitching and catching pipelines stocked. The good thing is that even if Teel can't cut it as a catcher, he's athletic enough to move off the position like Harry. I'd be down for him at 23.D-train wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 3:35 pm.454 now but Jesus Christ that is insane at an ACC school! Teel would look good in Teal!!! Re: 2023 MLB Draft
Prospect Insider was shining light on a potential Draft candidate in SS Arjun Nimmala. A very good read, although he might be long gone by the time the Mariners pick at 22.
https://prospectinsider.com/mariners-mi ... ening-day/
In last years draft the Seattle Mariners drafted high school shortstop Cole Young, and they could very well select another high school shortstop this year with one of their first three draft choices. They have the 22nd, 29th, and 30th overall selections in the upcoming draft and they could take a chance with another high school draft shortstop. One of the very talented young shortstops in this years draft class is Arjun Nimmala who won’t turn 18 years old until October.
The youngster is a right-handed hitter and thrower who is 6-foot-1 and weighs 170. He has shown plus power potential and Prospects Live is extremely high on him. They said, “He’s got a shot to hit 30+ homers per year and play on the dirt.” He is very young and has a lot more development left to go, but he has some very high potential. They are very high on Nimmala and have him ranked as their 11th best prospect.
That ranking is very different compared to the MLB Pipeline rankings where they have Nimmala listed as their 34th highest ranked draft prospect. With the large difference in different publications rankings, Nimmala could be a wild card in the draft. The Mariners may have a chance to select him or he might go well ahead of their first pick.
MLB Pipeline highlighted the lofty potential with the young shortstop, “Nimmala has every chance to play shortstop for a long time, with enough arm and range for the premium position to go along with loose actions. If it all clicks, the Florida State recruit could have plus grades across the board, and if that shows up in the spring, he could vault himself into serious first-round conversations.”
Here is a long home run Nimmala hit earlier this season from when he was ranked 16th previously on the Prospects Live board.

Re: 2023 MLB Draft
There's been a pretty big shakeup in the draft rankings recently at Fangraphs. Shortstop Kevin McGonigle has come out of nowhere and still rising. In fact a lot of shortstops are.
The other is 3B Brayden Taylor from TCU, who has been consistently ranked around the #11-13th rankings for most of the offseason and beginning of the year until now, by Baseball America and Prospects Live. He's up to #2 at Fangraphs.

Re: 2023 MLB Draft
I'm not surprised to see Will Gasparino moving up.
Re: 2023 MLB Draft
My God, Teel STILL has a .446 BA after 128 PAs. Unreal.
