OK - so I was just reading this article about how sea level air, and the geometry of T-Mobile makes it a pitcher's park and how it may be costing us free agent hitters. Blah, blah, blah - nothing new here, and you all rehashed this to death on this board. It might be true, but it might not.

How about thinking about the Mariners and their inept leadership that may be costing us pitching talent down the road. For example, - Kirby pitched his ass off today - he was amazing. And I know some days a pitcher is lights out and they still lose by a run - that's baseball. But if I was Kirby, I would be mighty pissed off with this team. It's one thing to lose by a run, and it's another to only allow one run and have your entire team muster 3 hits and zero runs the entire game.

I also get it if this was a team that was early in the rebuild process. But it is not. After last season, this was the M's chance to finally spend all the money they have been saving and really get some big bats. Instead, we get Kolten I-swing-a-pool-noodle Wong, LaStella, Hummell and Pollock.

If I am a pitcher like Kirby or Logan Gilbert, and I knew I would be a free agent in 3 or 4 years, I would look at this team and this moment in time and clearly see ownership and leadership for what it is - inept, cheap, clutzy, apathetic, greedy and lazy. If this is the offense they assembled at the zenith of their rebuild, why on earth would I ever want to stick with them in a few years when the team is declining? Why work for a crummy boss in a crummy organization if you don't have to? Today's game did not inspire loyalty in our young pitchers, I guaran-fucking-tee it.

And good old Scotty, bless his heart, he just sits there in the dugout looking like he did a bag of shrooms before the game. Sweet Lou would be having a stroke in the dugout after the second inning.

Maaaan, that's like a rant any of the guys here could go on.

Just change the names.

The one thing Dipoto has going for him is payroll is still down about 15% from where we were in 2018.

The team that year won 89 games, so his success has been pretty much in saving payroll.

We acted like it was in the minor leagues, but once those guys graduated we're a below average minor league system and this years MLB team would be lucky to approach 90 wins.

Hilarious thing is they say they can't spend now because they have to save up to extend those guys. Why would those pitchers not want to wait until FA????

We've all seen it play out.

The one thing that makes sense to me is that Dipoto got his extension based on selling ownership on a philosophy of remaining competitive with a lower than average payroll.

He talks a lot about adding good players, and how he thinks we're a top 10 payroll team. But when it comes down to it, he doesn't sign them, and the payroll continues to be firmly in the lower half of the league.

I think everyone's been waiting for the complementary players that will actually make a difference, but Dipoto has zero intention of adding those type of players. Unless they're at a discount of course.

In poker terms, he seems content to call with the hand he's got.

So look - they definitely recruited well and developed some extremely good arms. But they stopped short of supporting their pitching. That lack of investment is not, in my opinion, sending the right message to pitchers they want retain before they hit free agency. It's like recruiting the best NASCAR driver out there, and then handing him the keys to a Pontiac Aztek.
