NHL farm system

Post by Sibelius Hindemith » Mon May 29, 2023 5:37 pm

Could someone explain how it works. I read there is one AHL affiliate per two NHL teams but then i saw there are like 70 teams in the AHL so it doesn't make sense.. Also, i thought the Thunderbirds and Silvertips were farm teams but apparently not as they're not even in the AHL.

If you go to the bottom of this article there are links for each of the 5 divisions in the AHL. They all seem to have around 15 teams.

In the NHL (National Hockey League), it is not uncommon for two teams to share the same AHL (American Hockey League) team affiliate. This arrangement is known as a "dual affiliation" or a "shared affiliation."

In a dual affiliation, two NHL teams share the same AHL team as their primary development affiliate. This means that both NHL teams send their prospects and young players to play for the same AHL team during the season. The AHL team provides coaching, training, and playing experience to these players, with the goal of developing their skills and preparing them for potential NHL careers.

The article is about the AHL and ECHL, the ECHL is another separate league, there's probably around 70 teams in both of them.
The ECHL (formerly the East Coast Hockey League) is a mid-level professional ice hockey league based in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, with teams scattered across the United States and Canada. It is a tier below the American Hockey League (AHL).
There are 32 teams in the AHL.

I don't know who this guy is, seems here it is actually unusual
The Penguins were in such financial hardship that at one point the team couldn’t afford to buy their own sticks, Sarosy said. The Crunch ended up posting a franchise-worst 18-50-9-3 record during the 1998-99 season, and the dual affiliation subsequently ended.

Situations like those are why dual affiliates are a rarity in the AHL, Crunch fan and blogger Alexandra Ackerman said. She was skeptical when she heard the Lightning and the Panthers became the Crunch’s parent clubs prior to the 2021 season.

I don't see how it impacts what I said, even if two NHL teams are jointly affiliated with the same AHL team those two teams are still only affiliated with a single team

I didn't even check out the EHL part. The problem is that the same AHL teams are listed in multiple divisions from those links. The website is screwed up.

I also discovered that the Thunderbirds and Silvertips are Junior hockey league teams for ages 16-20. Players can be drafted from those teams just like colleges.
