The slightly too early trade deadline thread
Re: The slightly too early trade deadline thread
There were many of us that knew they needed multiple bats.
They didn't have enough top-down-depth.
So when a Moore gets hurt, they're immediately into the weaker players.
The plan I came up with before the season was to go get Christian Walker, Bryan Reynolds and Joc Pederson and force the fringe guys to AAA (or traded off). They have wRC+ of 112, 120 and 128 this season. That would've helped.
We had Castillo, Logan, Kirby, Ray, Marco, Flexen, Miller, Hancock, and Woo, but we needed bats.
Should have traded some of that pitching depth for hitters. It was obvious. Even Hunter Renfroe was available for peanuts if they couldnt pull something else off. Jerry probably picked Wong over Renfroe because he wanted Wong three years ago.
Somehow Jerry was the only one that couldn't see we needed hitting.

Re: The slightly too early trade deadline thread
I agree. But what the hell are we going to sell? If we want to get rid of the flotsam and jetsam, we’re looking at Murph, Teo, Kolten, and maybe Gene, Hags and JK. Who would take them? Any of them?D-train wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 7:36 pmSell!

Sadly, we are trying to unload trash, and there’s no MLB version of a weekend flea market. Nobody wants these guys. I can maybe see someone taking a chance on JK and maybe Gene, but we’d get shit back in return.
I think we are stuck with this season going down the crapper. Most of the trash heap are at the end of contracts (Teo, Murph and Kolten), and Gene is good through 2024. If anyone would take any of them, then great - get rid of them. Unfortunately, they are blocking a lot of the young guns we’d want to bring up to replace them. Ideally we would promote some prospects and let them get some playing experience when the stakes are low. But again, what do we do with the veterans who are blocking them?
That leaves us looking to next season. Well, they doesn’t look good either. We don’t have the farm system to get super splashy, and if history has taught us anything it’s that ownership will not get spendy in the FA market. And the FA market doesn’t look all that good next year either (I doubt Ohtani will be available - the Angels may be just good enough to resign him….and we’d outspend any of the big market teams that would go hard if he was available).
So, it’s Groundhog Day - we will be digging through the trash heap looking for guys who want a shot at redemption while Jerry tells us how brilliant he is for not overspending on wasted talent like Semien and Corey Seager, only to have Semien and Seager tee off on us over and over again.
I wish I was more optimistic, but I’m not feeling it.

Re: The slightly too early trade deadline thread
Sell of everyone except JK and J-Rod, Kirby, Gilbert, and Miller. May as well start another 5-year (20 year?) rebuild.
Re: The slightly too early trade deadline thread
Teo would have a little value, Geno maybe, and the relievers.Big_Maple wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 8:11 pmI agree. But what the hell are we going to sell? Marco if healthy, little value but we are not, picking up,his 12 mil option, Flexen again a little value. I am hoping there is at least one dumber GM out there then Dipoto that would take Wong thinking it something in Tank. Any reliever or player that will be a FA next year.Big_Maple wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 8:11 pmI agree. But what the hell are we going to sell? Re: The slightly too early trade deadline thread
Imagine looking at Wong's zero HRs and zero SBs and .186 SLG% on June 5th and thinking his career isn't over...lol
BA under Mendoza line. Bad hitter
OBP under the Mendoza line. God Awful hitter.
SLG% under the Mendoza line???? Dead man walking....

Santana was a mid season add. Last year they sorted out the rotation, BP, and position players.Juliooooo wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 3:59 amYep, they replaced those 2, lost Winker (while not great, he still managed to hit a little and get on base, and was at least an average hitter, better than Teo is now) and Santana (didn’t hit a lot, but was at least clutch).Gametime wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 3:46 amArguing wong and teo vs Hanniger and Frazier is pretty bad. Really a wash. No real money spent this off season
This team has two things going against it. An owner who loves profit and not winning. And Dipoto wants everybody to think how great and creative he is over everybody else. Then we wonder why we are basically the same.
It is what it is. The Mariner way.
