We have 40 men on the 40 man roster. That's enough to field a 26 man active roster. I like our first move of signing the Ranger castoff, the oil man Phillips Valdez. Those are the types that can fill out the roster if we are not going to sign good players. Just sign guys with catchy names.

Looking at our coaching additions, primarily the younger guys from within our system, I'd say the M's are confident about holding places open for the guys coming up. Woodworth knows the young guys from advanced league to AA having worked with them so they young pitchers rising to the MLB level will find a familiar face coming to Seattle in Wordworth along with Carson Vitale who was the minor league coordinator last year. I think this shows the M's are confident about their procedures throughout the system and really have a plan. Same with our new hitting coach..... these aren't "good ole' boys" that don't know how to use an "I-pad".... they know how to apply technology, they are able to communicate to young guys cause they are close to their generation, they know how to evaluate "spin rates" and "launch angles".... This is way out of my league as a fossil fan, but I'm pleased they seem to be moving on with what appears to be a "plan" and a singular approach.

If you're paying someone seven million dollars and he's producing a 1.0 WAR, you're getting ripped off. Even worse if he's producing 2.0 WAR at 14 million and 3.0 WAR at 21 million. Remember, an average player over a full season is about 1.8 WAR.

For contracts signed in the free agency in 2017 the average was a massive $10.5m per WAR, meaning if you were going to sign a player who would get 4 WAR for each of the next 4 years you should expect to pay him $168m for that contract. This has been shown to be linear so you would spend similar amounts on one 4 WAR player and two 2 WAR players, just the contract lengths may differ. This has been steadily growing over the decade

Perhaps it was only semantics, but it illustrated the awkwardness of a 25-minute Thursday news conference in which Rangers legend Ryan, 66, bid farewell with carefully chosen words and incomplete explanations.

Now, fans are left to wonder whether the face of the Rangers franchise is truly, as he said, stepping down for more time with his family and ranching — or whether Thursday was the outcome of a well-documented power struggle between Ryan and Rangers president and general manager Jon Daniels.

Nolan Ryan was rather terse about his departure.... this from a man who has owned two minor league franchises in addition to his executive work with the Astros. His sons are getting out also.... And Cole is definitely going to be gone. Funny, the Astros traded away Charlie Morton to the Rays or they would have had all three top Cy Young candidates in their rotation.

2 WAR is just over average. They shouldn't pay a penny over minimum for players that aren't capable of a 5 WAR season.

Fill 90% of your positions with average guys like Shed Long and Marco Gonzales, then spend your wad on guys that can give you 5 WAR from one roster spot.

Pay only for surplus WAR (over 2) not what your prospects should be capable of coming up and doing. Shed Long vs. Dee Gordon is a perfect example. Not only would Shed be better, but then we'd have $12M to spend towards a real ballplayer like Cole.

Spending $7-12M each on guys that play to the same results as a $500K player is a recipe for losing. As we've seen.
