He should have gone after Semien, but i don't think Seager would have signed here under any circumstance.
I think we were in the running for Semien. But Texas was willing to go to 6 or 7 years, I can't remember. Dipoto was only willing to do 5.

I agree 100% I think Jerry feels that he's smarter than the majority of the GM's and that he can trade and draft his way there. But he needs to wake up and realize that Free Agency is just as valuable of a tool as the others are. You don't need to spend the MOST money, but you do need to spend a hell of a lot more than what you have been.
Egos are a crazy thing. The Seahawks had a very similar style of thinking in the draft for several years. They knew better than others, they can reach for positions of need, etc. It was a couple of years ago they said going into the draft that they had changed tactics. Amazing how actually taking the the most talented player has worked out better for them. Sometimes when you do something that no one else does, there is a reason no one else does it. We got spoiled by landing later round talent like guys like Sherman, Wagner and Wilson that we completely devalued the first round and wasted picks on turds like Ifedi and Collier and to a lesser extent guys like Bruce Irvin. We devalued them more by constantly trading back, because we knew better and could identify talent later. It resulted in guys like Tedrick Thompson and Mike Tyson instead of actual early draft talent. A team that was in need of studs to plug in got a bunch of depth pieces that weren't very good.

It was ego, and the same goes for this organization. They somehow feel that if they win on a budget it will make them look smarter than everyone else. Oh, and they will get to keep more money too. The win win situation for the Mariners is even if they lose they still make more money, so they are happy. Sure, some of the players are mad, but in reality? Who would be pissed off making millions of dollars a year and having your off season vacation a bit earlier than expected? The fans pay for this, in more ways than one.

One thing to remember, Michael, is that future contracts are also based on how you have done in the playoffs. Your team doesn't make the playoffs, you get fewer dollars even though, like Cal did, you carried the team for many weeks.

That caller nailed it. As soon as the fans stop going to games and buying merch (neither will happen...this city is full of soccer moms and latte drinkers) this Org will continue to make priority #1 all about profit.

I wouldn't even be able to enjoy the M's in the World Series knowing that Stanton and Co would have to pay Semien money in 6 and 7 years. :| I don't even think I could sleep at night. Tossing and Turning Tossing and turning and if I did finally get to sleep I would likely wake up screaming in terror with nights sweats. Not remotely worth a World Series win having to live in that constant anguish thinking about the financial hardship M's owners and their families would have to endure in just 6-7 short years.

Just look at the Mets and the Padres.

Two highest payrolls in our division is—-Houston and Texas. Both In the playoffs.

We have a 138 million dollar payroll. This won’t work in our division.

And we sat here watching both the Astros and Rangers improving while we got Wong, LaStella, and Pollock. I'm sure both other organizations were shaking in their cleats (from laughter)!

Yep, that is why they push "beautiful stadium, fan experience, garlic fries, hydproplane races, and family friendly" instead of "come watch the Mariners make the playoffs". They can continue to make money while not spending money...which is a great business model. Which, I guess for everyone but the poor fans shelling out all the money? That's all this is...a business. Kudos for the few players that spoke out, but judging by the lifeless performance in September? I wouldn't be shocked to hear that the majority of them are fine being done and not having to "work" in October.
