Q: Are we ever going to see L.J. Collier get more playing time?
A: The fact that Seattle’s 2019 first-round pick can’t really get on the field is disappointing if not outright disturbing given that he’s 24 and played a lot at a major school, leading to the idea he’d be ready to help immediately.
Instead, Collier has played in just six games making just two tackles and played just five snaps in the last game for which he was active against Tampa Bay.
He was a healthy inactive against the 49ers with the rest of the Seattle defensive line back to full health. Seattle has nine defensive linemen on its 53-man roster but typically has eight up on game day. It’s clear at this point Collier is the ninth of the nine and will be active only if someone else is injured.
Also clear: The Seahawks are not in the mode to just give a young guy snaps to develop. So at this point, he’s going to have to earn every snap he gets.

Re: Ed Dickinson activated ...Jamar Taylor waived
sure its disappointing, the question is why isn't he ready. I never see anything about what the issue is. The idea was he would be but again, it seems to be a roll of the dice who actually is or isn't. Other teams might very well be rolling him out there anyway, Pete doesn't seem inclined, hopefully he eventually comes around
PC saying he thinks he will contribute, guess its he just isn't ready yet...

“He’s just a young guy getting going,” Carroll commented on Thursday. “Go back he missed a lot of camp time, that time is so important for the young guys to develop. It’s just a process. He’s going to help us before the end of the year.”

LOL PC still bringing up the couple weeks he missed in August that made him forget that he is supposed to: Run towards man with football and if catch him, throw him to ground.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2019 4:14 amsure its disappointing, the question is why isn't he ready. I guess he didn't learn that in the 3 years he started in college.

Re: Ed Dickinson activated ...Jamar Taylor waived
two weeks?...Training camp begun July 25th, Collier was injured July 30th...he began practicing again in September, he missed pretty much the entire training camp. PC seems to think that hurts a rookie's development, you say it shouldn't ok. I don't think its like if he had training camp he be a stud edge rusher now. I think he still only be getting used fairly sparingly. I think he is raw, he was drafted because of potential, and that potential was hampered by missing training camp. It be nice to begin to see it this season, we shall see. Maybe it be next season, who knows.
from a week earlier...Sep. 11, 2019 at 3:25 pm
Collier, the team’s first-round pick, suffered a high ankle sprain the first week of training camp and did little until practicing on a limited basis last week.
Carroll said Collier, a defensive end out of TCU, will practice fully this week and has “a chance to maybe even play this week.’’
Collier didn’t play in the preseason, so he will undoubtedly be eased in to things when he does play. The Seahawks also have a pretty good defensive-end rotation going with Jadeveon Clowney’s addition, Ziggy Ansah’s return coming soon, veterans Quinton Jefferson and Branden Jackson improving and second-year player Rasheem Green’s emergence.
As for Collier, Tuesday’s practice — the first in full pads — marked the first chance for the Seahawks to get a really good read on where he is.
Veteran left tackle Duane Brown, asked about the play on which Collier was hurt, volunteered that Collier is “still kind of raw in his technique’’ but has lots of potential.
That seemed to be the growing conventional wisdom: Collier has a lot of ability and want-to but may need some time refining his skills to really be an impact player. He hadn’t gotten much time with the No. 1 defense, typically working with the second and third units, with Jefferson and Green typically working with the starters.
Re: Ed Dickinson activated ...Jamar Taylor waived
He is 24 and was a 3 year starter for a power five conference. As Condotta stated, he was expected to contribute immediately. That's kind of why you draft for need. To fill the need now now in a couple years.

Glad to see Dickson back and sad to see Taylor go.
I have heard good things about his preseason and in season performance. I do like Diggs and McDonald, along with Flowers, and Shaq. I guess Blair could push Diggs to nickle when needed. On the flip maybe Ugo makes an impact. Those would probably be the first two followed by Thorpe.

Re: Ed Dickinson activated ...Jamar Taylor waived
yeah, he had a high ankle sprain and missed training camp and so far his season has disappointing, but even under the best of circumstances he wasn't going to be their starting DE or something. You do not find a rookie starter at DE with the 29th pick in the draft. That would have been an absolute steal. Sure they would have loved to have gotten a contribution out of him, they could have drafted him with that in mind, but if its next season then its next season. I really do not see it as that significant one way or the other. In the best case scenario he was going to be a rookie DE, he wasn't going to have 7-8 sacks at this point in the season, dominating games or whatever. Yeah, he could have been getting playing time and learning. Pete has decided not to do that, maybe some other coach has him out there, I don't know.

Re: Ed Dickinson activated ...Jamar Taylor waived
here is a rundown of performance of defensive players taken in the first round, seems pretty hit and miss to me...
he wasn't going to be Nick Bosa
Quinnen Williams
Clelin Ferrell
Devin White
Devin Bush is having a great season, taken 10th
Rashan Gary
Jeffery Simmons, coming back from injury
he wasn't going to be Nick Bosa
Quinnen Williams
New York Jets rookie defensive tackle Quinnen Williams broke through with the first half-sack of his NFL career in a Week 8 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the former Alabama star has generally failed to stand out.
In Williams' defense, an ankle injury limited him to just 23 snaps in September, and that entire Jets team has been a raging dumpster fire thus far. Still, as a No. 3 overall pick out of the SEC, he's expected to eventually make an impact in his maiden NFL campaign.
Clelin Ferrell
Surprise No. 4 overall pick Clelin Ferrell picked up a crucial sack in the fourth quarter of his first-ever NFL game, but the Oakland Raiders edge-defender hasn't laid a finger on an opposing quarterback since then. Meanwhile, he's struggled at times against the run, and he's been penalized four times in six games.
"He now ranks 116th among 117 qualifying edge defenders in overall grade," wrote Mark Chichester of Pro Football Focus this week, "and last among all rookie edge defenders in pass-rush win rate.
Devin White
Josh Allen has been pretty good so farLike the defensive players selected ahead of him, Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie linebacker Devin White's first half-season in the NFL has been impacted by injury. In the LSU product's case, a sprained MCL has essentially cost him all but three games.
White has struggled in coverage against backs and tight ends and he's yet to make any splash plays from scrimmage. But he does have 23 tackles, including 15 in his last two outings.
Ed Oliver...pretty good so farJacksonville Jaguars rookie edge-defender Josh Allen has started just three games and played fewer than 70 percent of his team's defensive snaps, but the Kentucky product is tied with Bosa for the rookie lead with seven sacks.
He's not an every-down player just yet, but he is a starter and has 18 tackles, four quarterback hits and a sack through seven games. And progress is critical. Thirteen of those tackles have come in the last three weeks, and Oliver was much more of a disruptive presence in October than he was in September.
Devin Bush is having a great season, taken 10th
Rashan Gary
Christian Wilkins, okay so farGreen Bay Packers rookie edge-defender Rashan Gary has yet to be on the field for more than 40 percent of the defensive snaps in any of the team's first eight games. They're bringing the Michigan product along slowly, which is a luxury that comes with having Za'Darius Smith and Preston Smith on the roster.
Brian BurnsOnly about a dozen interior defensive linemen have more tackles this season than Miami Dolphins rookie defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, who has 23 despite the fact he's basically played in just six games.
Dexter Lawrence, having a very good yearAfter shining in September, Carolina Panthers rookie edge-defender Brian Burns has seen his playing time decrease in each of the last four weeks. And while he was penalized three times against Jacksonville in Week 5, the drop-off in snaps might not be an indictment on the coaching staff's confidence in the Florida State product.
But the defensive tackle out of Clemson has quietly put together a superb rookie season—one that has displayed his great run defense as well as his ability to bring pressure. He's already got 21 tackles, three quarterback hits, a pair of sacks and a forced fumble
Jeffery Simmons, coming back from injury
Montez SweatNobody really expected the two-time first-team All-SEC Mississippi State product to make much of an impact in 2019, but he's already got a start, a sack, two tackles for loss and seven tackles under his belt.
Jerry TilleryThe Mississippi State product has yet to explode as a pass-rusher, but he ranks second among first-round front-seven defenders with 30 tackles in eight starts. His run defense has been exceptional, and he hasn't made any critical mistakes in that discipline.
The problem is he has only 1.5 sacks and 11 total pressures at the midseason mark, despite the fact he's essentially been a full-time pass-rusher.
And Collier, bringing up the rear...Los Angeles Chargers first-year defensive tackle Jerry Tillery has enjoyed an uptick in playing time the last two weeks as a result of an injury to veteran Brandon Mebane. But he has just three tackles and hasn't touched an opposing quarterback in two starts since Mebane went down.
That's got to be disappointing for Chargers fans who hoped to see a spark from Tillery after the Notre Dame product was held to just five tackles and two quarterback pressures while serving in a limited role during the first six weeks of the season.
He's got a sack-and-a-half under his belt, and he did blow up a David Montgomery run without getting credit on the stat sheet in the first quarter Sunday, but he's generally been missing in action.
yeah, his season has been disappointing so far. But in terms of the season in general, what would a decent rookie season for him look like at this point, couple of sacks and a dozen tackles? I just do not see it that significant in terms of the season in general. He was never going to be a dominant force on the defense, hopefully maybe he still can at some point, if not then he would be a bustIt's no surprise that the Seattle Seahawks are bringing rookie defensive end L.J. Collier along slowly, mainly because they've already got Jadeveon Clowney and Ezekiel Ansah on the edge. But it's not a good sign that the 29th overall selection out of TCU continues to lag behind second-year third-round pick Rasheem Green and third-year UDFA Branden Jackson on the Seattle depth chart.
Collier has just two tackles on 65 snaps, and he's yet to contribute in a meaningful way as either a run-defender or a pass rusher
Re: Ed Dickinson activated ...Jamar Taylor waived
It's not significant in terms of the season (we are freaking 8-2 and are going to win the division) but it is significant in terms of the baffling trend of underperforming non contributing 1st picks especially relative to how well they do later in the draft.
I got it!!!!!! They just need an opener like in baseball!!!!
Bring in some consultant to make their first pick for them and then they take over in the second round for the rest of the draft.

On the serious side . I think the apparent lack of success of 1st round drafts speaks to the winning % of the franchise. The Hawks draft position is usually in the later rounds. When Hawks offer a 1st.in trade it is scoffed at.D-train wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2019 3:47 pmIt's not significant in terms of the season (we are freaking 8-2 and are going to win the division) but it is significant in terms of the baffling trend of underperforming non contributing 1st picks especially relative to how well they do later in the draft.

A late 1st is basically a high 2nd. There are no slam dunks there. Ifedi has been the wrath of amateur draft experts for the past few years. Frustrating at times he has been durable and a serviceable RT. Some team out there will give him sone cash. As far as Collier his rookie season isn't even completed yet and some are declaring him a bust.
To his defense Collier wasn't the prize rookie on this draft class There was no hype surrounding him.
The media and fans not only locally but nationally tracked Metcalf's every movement. DK had to deal with the pressure from his supporters and detractors (the latter being the loudest) And obviously he has top 5 1st round talent. That is not debatable anymore.
This week will be interesting. the Eagles fans amd the miraculous gift of hindsight 20/20 vision are quite livid that the FO "foolishly" passed on DK and took JJ Arcega-Whiteside.

You should be able to hear audible groans with each DK reception. I hope he has a gigantic game.
