Not stuck but if they were going to try him in the OF it should have been done by now. btw it was White and his agency that were pushing for the deal, not the M's per Divish.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2019 5:10 pmdon't know anything about Kingerly, seeing the Phillies played him all over the place last season, a lot in center field. He is supposed to be a second baseman i take it, Bowa saying if they would leave him at second he be a lot better. Again, I don't think the Mariners are stuck having to play White at first
Evan White - the future gets him 6 yrs/$24 mil, up to $55 mil

and he has a chip on his shoulder, couldn't get a scholarship, was a walk on at Arizona
“That’s put a chip on my shoulder my whole career to prove that I could do those things every day,” said Kingery, now viewed as an advanced prospect on the fast track through the Phillies' farm system, which has improved dramatically in depth thanks to Kingery and teammates like outfielder Carlos Tocci and pitcher Tom Eshelman.

They should do some analytics on the variance of performance between guys with and without chips on their shoulders. The difficulty would be finding a reasonable sample size of guys without chips.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2019 6:18 pmand he has a chip on his shoulder, couldn't get a scholarship, was a walk on at Arizona

Right. I thought the 55 million and the options were part of the first 6 years. Its a small gamble of 24 million for potential huge savings years 6-9.

If White and his agency were pushing for this then it worries me a bit. To a point a previous poster made - if he comes out of the gate as the next best thing in baseball, in 2-4 years he's going to start whining about his deal and demand to renegotiate. Then the M's will be left with having to tell him too bad you signed the deal thus assuring he leaves when its over, or give him a new deal and set a bad standard. Real head scratcher, the M's should have told him - come up this year and do well and we'll talk...

Huh? I like how we're dinging the FO now for doing something pretty damn solid for a kid that's by all reports a standup dude. I mean there's a lot of greed and people being exploited and just straight evil out there in our society right now meanwhile here we are criticizing the Ms for doing a solid for kid.
Say he doesn't make it past a yr or two in the bigs, so what? The Ms have plenty of loot and $24m over 6yrs isn't going to keep them from being successful.
Franchises can't win anymore. Don't pay for what a player has done, don't pay for what they might do. Find that sweet spot where you're paying them for what they are doing. Well, that's not so easily done. I like that middle option. Diagnose the talent and pay them for what they are about to do. That seems to be the best approach.
