A trade deadline plan:
Mariners trade DH Mitch Garver, OF Cade Marlow, SP Michael Morales to the Giants for OF Michael Conforto
Rationale: The Giants aren't going anywhere. They've lost 7 of 10 and already find themselves 9 games back in the NL West. Conforto is in the last year of a deal that pays him $18 million and the M's would likely have to foot the bill of around $8 million or so of that at the deadline. The Seattle native has enjoyed a nice bounce back year thus far, hitting .277/.329/.489/.818 with 7 homers and a 139 OPS+. The move gets rid of Garver's contract by adding a few enticing prospects for the Giants. It allows for Haniger to slot into more of a DH role while Conforto takes over a spot in the outfield rotation.
Mariners trade OF Jonatan Clase, IF Michael Arroyo, SP Taylor Dollard to the Cardinals for RHP Ryan Helsley
Rationale: The Cardinals are falling off a cliff and a fire sale is coming with some of their more talented rental players. Helsley is one of the nastier arms in the game... pitching to en ERA in the 1.75 range over the last 3 seasons... featuring an arsenal that includes a 101 mph fastball and a nasty splitter/slider combo. M's need to add a backend reliever with Brash going down. Helsley is a free agent in 2026.
Mariners trade SP Emerson Hancock, 3B Ben Williamson, OF Spencer Packard to the Mets for 1B Pete Alonso and RHP Jorge Lopez
Rationale: It seems the Mets will be a middling team once again. Injuries are starting to take hold of their pitching staff and this was defined by the GM as a step back year. Alonso, like Conforto, is a pure rental... as is Lopez who signed a 1-year deal with the Mets. I don't really need to introduce Alonso... he'll hit .230/.330/.500 and put up 40 dingers on command. Lopez is a solid relief arm who throws 97 with good secondary stuff. Has a 2.00ish ERA thus far for the Mets. The Mets get a young, controlled starter, a solid infield prospect, and an older OF prospect who has posted elite contact rates in the minors back for their troubles.
M's DFA Ty France, Luis Urias, Seby Zavala, Austin Voth
Roster:
1. Josh Rojas 3B (he needs to be playing every day)
2. Julio Rodriguez CF
3. Michael Conforto LF
4. Pete Alonso 1B
5. Cal Raleigh C
6. Jorge Polanco 2B
7. Mitch Haniger DH
8. Luke Raley/Dom Canzone RF
9. JP Crawford SS
Super Utility: Dylan Moore
Backup C: Blake Hunt
SP:
1. Luis Castillo
2. Logan Gilbert
3. George Kirby
4. Bryce Miller
5. Bryan Woo
RP:
CL: Ryan Helsley
8th: Andres Munoz
High leverage: Jorge Lopez, Ryne Stanek, Gabe Spier
Low Leverage: Trent Thornton, Kirby Snead, Cody Bolton, Tyler Saucedo

Re: A trade deadline plan:
Gut reaction: Why would the San Francisco Giants trade a resurgent Michael Conforto for a year and two months of a floundering Mitch Garver when designated hitter Jorge Soler is under contract through 2026?

It's a good thing these players can do things other than DH... the Giants outfield is dog piss and Soler can slot in the vacated position.
A resurgent Conforto making $18 million as a pure rental carries next to no trade value. They will surely trade him if they're out of contention at the break.
And in case your eyes aren't working today... the trade isn't FOR Mitch Garver. The trade includes a top 15 starting pitching prospect in a good farm system and a controlled MLB-ready OF in return as well.
Re: A trade deadline plan:
Dunno if the trade is comparable in terms of what the M’a give up, but I would much rather get Mason Miller from the A’s. He’s a beast, he’s due to become a FA next season, and the A’s aren’t going anywhere this season either. He would be a top tier closer.

Miller is going to cost you a couple top 5 prospects in your system. He's controlled and disgusting.Big_Maple wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2024 7:15 pmDunno if the trade is comparable in terms of what the M’a give up, but I would much rather get Mason Miller from the A’s. Rumor is plenty of teams have inquired and nobody has come close to the A's lofty asking price.
Helsley is like an A to Miller's A+ and wouldn't cost you nearly as much.

Except Helsley is the pitching version of Mitch Hanigar, he is frequently hurt.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2024 7:17 pmMiller is going to cost you a couple top 5 prospects in your system. Also, why the heck are you trading Hancock for a rental...and a bad for us rental at that? No way is Alonso staying here...we won't pay him and he won't hit here,so essentially you are giving away Hancock for another one dimensional homer or strikeout guy.
Finally, your Giants trade will never happen. You have us eating $28million...$8mill for Conforto and $20million to eat the rest of Garver's contract because SF won't eat it. On top of that, France has more value than you want to believe, so trade him and get something back.

Define frequently hurt. I see 55 games in 21 and 22 with 33 in 23 and healthy again this season. In case you missed it, the reason we need relievers is because ours are hurt. It happens.Bil522 wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2024 8:50 pmExcept Helsley is the pitching version of Mitch Hanigar, he is frequently hurt.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2024 7:17 pmMiller is going to cost you a couple top 5 prospects in your system. Hancock is not a valuable pitcher. Hasn’t shown anything better than being a fringe starter and provides little value to the Mariners than being a taxi 5th starter. That role can easily be filled by other Diaz or DK in Tacoma. Teams who are pitching light would find way more value in the chance that he could find some stuff to be elevated to like a no. 4.
I’d love to hear how Alonso is a bad rental lol. Hitting at one of the most difficult parks for righties in baseball he’s a consistent 230/330/500 hitter who averages 40 homers a year. You see anyone on the M’s capable of that?
And who would you suggest the M’s get who is capable of that sort of production for that cheap?
Ty France is a 0 tool player if he’s not hitting for a 120 OPS+. He can’t run, can’t defend, has crap power. Now he can’t hit and that’s all she wrote.
I’m in no way suggesting the M’s won’t have to eat some cash in places. That is however what you have to do when you fuck up your entire off season and hope to fix those mistakes.
