They should be called Oakland Anachronisms.bpj wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 10:30 amWhat do you guys think about this?
Am I the only one that thinks that Oakland doesn't deserve to have the team anyways?
The city's a dump. And the stadium is a dump.
Their valuation will skyrocket being in Las Vegas imo.
Nobody wants to go to Oakland to see a game. I think getting out of there will be a positive thing for MLB, what are your thoughts?
They are the epitome of that word - "something that belongs to the past rather than the present". For all the sadness their fans have shown, they were in Philadelphia for 53 years and Kansas City for another 12. They've spent more of their history NOT being in Oakland than they have spent living in Oakland and become the current team in the MLB with the most previous locations. Having "only" been in Oakland since 1968 - there are probably one or two forum members here who have underwear that is older than them.
There is nothing but positives for MLB for the relocation. Apparently Vegas gets 36 million visitors per year, I am pretty sure they will find enough to sell every seat in the park, every single game. Watching a baseball game will become part of the tourists vacation to include alongside their trip to gamble, commit sins and see the Grand Canyon, David Copperfield and Blue Wank Group. I'll be one of the plastic tourists that watch a game or two when the Mariners go there. Can't wait to see what they do there but at the same time, we better get our act together because that team will become competitive with a pipeline of money that is going to come their way. Nevada is giving them $380m to fund the stadium which will help them along the way. Fisher will cash out once he is allowed to - I think there is some block on him selling in the short-term but once he departs that's when they become a threat to the Astros.
Oakland on the other hand is a shit-hole that MLB will be delighted to have seen the back of.

For the past three years my older daughter has lived in Oakland, parked her car on the street and has never experienced a break-in. She parks her car on the street when she takes BART to her job in downtown San Francisco.
A year or so ago in a decent neighborhood of San Francisco, my younger daughter came out of her apartment at 5:30 am to find her parked car up on a jack. She kicked the jack aside.
Oakland and the East Bay have always been maligned because they lack the historic character of San Francisco. Nevertheless, walks through Oakand have been pleasant.
This fan will miss the Oakland Coliseum where at a doubleheader this May I made the final of my five visits there:

I had tickets to Game 5 of the 1990 World Series at the Oakland Coliseum but the Cincinnati Reds swept the Athletics in four games.

I hope you never lose your rosy, rainbow and unicorn outlook of the world. But those of us that travel for work will keep calling places like Oakland shitholes AND cesspools.gil wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 9:55 pmAny crime is too much; not going to argue with that. But I just was in Oakland a year ago, visited a friend overnight, and parked my rental car on his street. No problems.Walla Walla Dawg II wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 9:19 pmI dare you to park your car at any park in Oakland (proper) and go for a 3 hour walk. When you get back, you will have a broken window and your car looted.hing visiblegil wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 4:45 pmAll cities have their problems, and always have. But descriptions of places as hellholes or cesspools just not match my experience. *Of course* there is crime and there are things that we wish weren't part of our lives. But most of the time, for most people, you can live your life - go out, raise your kids, etc. I suspect that most people who trash cities don't spend much time in them.
This is the same as downtown San Francisco.
All I can say is that if you don't leave anything in view inside your car, it may not be broken into. I am talking even 11 cents in change on the floorboards will get you a broken window.
How do I know? When I go to these cities to do work, the gas station owners ask me to park at a filling station so they can keep track of my car.... so it doesn't get broken into.
But I don't leave anything visible when I park my car. Not even a t-shirt when I'm parking in a private driveway in a rich suburb or a small town. It doesn't make these places hellholes or cesspools.

All I know is that Oakland lost all of their big league sports teams and it's the only city where an In N Out burger was closed down because of crime.

Right.
I just know that on occasion I get security reports from my clients while I'm planning my trips. And I know what it means when they list on the Security Report to be on site after the sunrise and make sure your are gone from the site before dusk.
It's always on these sites I see bullet holes in the buildings and glass.
These places are shitholes and cesspools.

I have been trying to find the right words to facilitate how I'm feeling about this. But I think I have. What is happening in Oakland with the Oakland A's to me is nothing short of a crime. To me, that team is being stolen from 56 years of history. Is being stolen from four generations of fans. It's being stolen from an entire city. It's is being stolen by a man who did nothing to earn this team other than get it signed over to him when his daddy died. He didn't have to work hard. He didn't have to grind away at an 8 to 5. He didn't have to work at all. And what does this man do to show his appreciation for his good fortune? He gives millions of fans the finger, while he high tails it to the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas all on their dime. What a bastion of humanitarianism this man is. I don't care that the man's wealthy. I don't care that the man can do whatever he wants because of his bank account. What I care about are the millions of fans that no longer have a piece of civic pride that means the world to them. All in the name of luxury boxes. Have your wealth. Make your money. Enjoy the finer things. That's perfectly fine. But to steal from these people that have done nothing to you except not wanting to foot the bill for the entirety of your palace when you can afford to chip in a bit?... I changed my mind IT IS CRIMINAL. NOTHING SHORT ABOUT IT.

Thank you...and from fans of a team that MLB tried to orchestrate a relocation of, it's interesting to me how similar the narrative is, no fan base, lousy venue, can't make money. It's obvious in both cases you have an owner intent on relocating the franchise and that's it. And what, it's good for baseball, let's leave it up to owners to decide that. I remember when they decided contracting the Twins would be good for baseball, how is that treating them? And what's the reasoning, Las Vegas gets lots of tourists. So take the A's out of Oakland to turn them into a tourist attraction because this would be good for baseball, okay

Hiya, welcome on board. Great to have you. Love your passion and your history, it's gonna be a hell of a ride plus educational for me personally listening to your contributions.TridentHawk wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 6:16 pmI have been trying to find the right words to facilitate how I'm feeling about this. I slightly disagree with the four generations though - the team was planted in Oakland in 1968, probably in a similar fashion to how they have been taken out (my homework tonight is to read up on their Philadephia and KC years).
There will have been no life-long As fans there at that time, would there? They are only 9 years older than the Mariners.
At best someone born in the early/mid 70s i.e. our generation could be the first generation Oakland fans and I don't have 3 further generations sat under me just yet and we probably won't for another decade or two.
Yes horrible for any team to be ripped out of their community - but that is the biggest fault of your fabulous American sports. Unless you are the Green Bay Packers there is little to stop greedy owners tearing up history and relocating.
Around the MLB, how many teams are not vulnerable to this kind of stunt? Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Cardinals, Cubs perhaps? Even the Dodgers weren't safe in the old days albeit relocation is incredibly unlikely for them nowadays.
That's the one thing that does worry me about all the clamour for Stanton to sell the team. He is total scum for sure, but once a team changes hands or passed down a family this kind of thing is on the cards. I have often wanted to ask in here about Sonicsgate but I get the feeling that's it's such an elephant in the room of Seattle history that very few people want to open those wounds.
Be careful what we wish for, and that is not an endorsement of our current owners.

Oakland hasn't earned their team? What planet are you from man? 56 years? What the **** are you talking about? GTFOH. I don't know what city you live in now but if you're a Mariners fan, please don't be one anymore. Go be a Dodgers fan. You sound like their kind of fan.bpj wrote: ↑Fri Sep 27, 2024 7:00 pmI haven't been to Seattle in years for exactly that reason, but I'm very much looking forward to going to games in Las Vegas, even if the Mariners aren't playing.
I wouldn't set foot in Oakland in 2024.
Seattle is becoming a lib dump.
A city should have to earn their team.
Oakland hasn't.
And Seattle is failing. But at least most of Seattle is still a beautiful city, for now, unlike Oakland.
