Calkins questions JSs roster build

I would say JS has done a great job at maintaining a mediocre roster the past ten years. His drafts have been unremarkable since 2013 and he frequently has overpaid in trades and FA signings over that same period. What happened to the guy that had 3 great drafts in a row, pulled off masterful trades to acquire Chris Clemons and Marshawn Lynch, and made great FA signings like Browner, Bennett, Avril and McQuistan?

I didn't hate the last few drafts. That said? I understand those that question the decisions to draft outside, inside of addressing the issues on the interior. I like JSN, I like Witherspoon....but I understand those that didn't want us to use higher selections on those positions. I am not so certain about JSN. He sure looked like a guy that is going to put up #1 type numbers. Him in a combo with DK looks pretty damn good right now. WR is certainly a position you can draft early. So is CB. So, again, while I understand the questioning, I don't really agree. You need to be able to throw the ball and you need to be able to defend the pass.

I agree on the Charbonet pick. It feels a little bit like when they drafted C Mike. We have other holes. Back up RB can be addressed later. For Christ sakes, who thought that Chris Carson would be the stud that he was? Walker is a dude....we could have waited to draft a back the very next year, IMO. Be interesting to do a deep dive into that draft and see what kind of talent was available on the O Line at that time. Not something I can do right now, but I think I will.

Good comp for JSN might be Golden Tate. Adjustment year as a rookie but then took off and was a pretty damn good WR.

He was fast, as I recall. Remember Pete going on and on about his “measurable”. Was never actually a football player. Didn’t produce in college or the pros, it these arrogant coaches all think they can be the one to fix it. It’s why athletic QBs like Richardson get over drafted all the time.
