5/27 Nationals vs. Mariners GT

I heard on the radio this morning that the Mariners hit above league average in their first at-bats against starting pitchers, average in their 2nd at-bats, and well below average in their 3rd at-bats. Given that most teams hit better against a starting pitcher as the game progresses, can anyone explain why it's the reverse for the Ms?

It is hard to hit the second of back to back HRs with men on base. I will cut him some slack there.
